I am going to get the software updated on mine. So what I am going to do is put the old controller back in so everything gets updated and once home install the new controller.

Or the other way is to specify at the start of the update that a new hardware had been installed. I don't know how the update would react to this given that the new controller is not recognised by the computer specific to the car.

The best bet is to remove the controller and put th old one in for the time it takes to update and swap straight after. Simple.

Lugnut, with yours if you put the old controller and update it will simply update the component it failed to update the first time. This can be done while you wait. 10 minutes max. Good luck!

I just did my 4/08 DCT with controller 309, and it works great. It's a small mod and falls short of the new iDrive but I still like it.

I've got a February '08 build E90 and would really like to know this information too before I make the decision to order a controller and trim piece.

Thanks.

For pre-03/08 E9x M3 you need to make sure that you have the latest code in your car before trying this iDrive controler swap.

Technic, thanks for the response. How do I determine if I have the latest code? If it turns out I don't, what do I do to get my dealer to install the latest code and what changes (if any) will it make to my car?

Thanks.

Only the dealer can determine if your car requires a software update. What I have found by asking several dealers is that they don't really like to be messing too much with the car programming because it could result in modules becoming defective/disabled after the coding process. I don't know if this is because either BMW really designed a flimsy coding system or simply because dealers do not follow the correct procedure in coding vehicles. But definitely something must be wrong when all the dealers asked told me the same exact thing...

If you have a great relationship with your dealer techs/SA and you trust their job you could simply ask for your car to be coded with the latest firmware that your car can handle, but again be aware that shit could happen and most probably it will not be covered under warranty.

Just to update, I had my car serviced last weekend and as part of the service my Idrive was reset and updated by the dealer (my idrive was locking up and reacting slowly).

Got the car back, plugged the new controller in and it worked no problem. All that was needed was the newest software.

Worked for me...

I've been following this thread for a while and wanted to post my own experience. Installed mine tonight and everything works perfectly on my 3/08 production E90 M3.

First, MANY Thanks to Dan @ United. I ordered my console and controller Friday 10/23 and recieved them today 10/28. Super fast shipping and responded quickly to my PM asking about inventory - thanks Dan!!

I had my software updated last month when my amp was replaced. Part numbers installed are 65-82-9-213-309 (controller) and 51-16-7-903-960 (console). Everything went without a hitch (in large part to the OPs pics) and the new controller unit is SO much easier to use. Highly recommended mod!

I bought the controller at the Japanese BMW dealer. I order the controller part numbered 048 but it came as 9189049.

I tried it but it didn't work 100%. all the buttons and functions worked except dial(scroll function) but the cross movement works.

any ideas?

Is it just my program old?

Is there a way to determine what version of programming my car has without taking it to the dealer?

Since I have an 02/08 build E90, if it's a matter of getting the latest programming to get the new iDrive controller to work, I'd like to make sure that is done and I have no issues as a result before I order and install the controller.

Thanks.

When the car is updated the computer will use the latest available software. So there is no worry as to which version will be installed.

It's very important to return the car to original factory spec before updating any software. Once the update s done then plug-in the updated/latest hardware.

These computers are like Windows 95 and will not recognise new hardware unless specified at the vehicle identity stage as per my post in another thread.

I am getting my car updated on Friday, and when I take it in, I will plug-in the old controller so that the programming will go without a hitch. Hopefully.

Check their site, I think it was $430 for the controller & console. Also came with a new ashtray cover which I didn't think I would need... but ended up using because the finish was just different enough I would have noticed.

what is the newest version of the update?
Can you please tell me because the dealer here in Japan, tells me they can't update idrive by it self. They say ECU also has to be updated.

also how do I find out what version I have now?
