200k suspension maintenance

Hey everyone!

Happy to report that my 09' has just clicked 200k miles and is still running great! Other than basic maintenance it's been pretty hassle free during the time I've owned it.

That said I'm looking to diagnose a 'clunk' coming from the left rear of the car. It's most noticeable when you drive over a slightly bumpy road. Almost sounds like the exhaust is knocking against the side of the frame (its not this, I've checked that much) -or- a worn out control arm bushing with no rubber left - Noise only occurs when driving over tiny bumps in road, not during acceleration, breaking, or cornering.

I've pulled up the rear suspension on real OEM:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=33_1408
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=33_1416

I haven't had the car up on a rack to fully locate the source of the knock, but my gut is telling me it's worn out bushings, probably the lower control arm? Any of you have similar issues or any issues with worn out bushings? In a perfect world I'd replace them all, but for now just looking to tackle the most necessary.

Thanks,
Ryan

Congratulations on hitting 200k on an E9X! What a glorious 200k miles!

Pull off the rear wheel and look at the bushings. At that mileage I would replace all the suspension control arms and bushings, but that's me

Nope, did a bearing swap in my garage @ 120k miles. Once I get another DD in the next year I'll turn this into a weekend toy. Thinking I may stroke it!

Do you know of any stores that sell complete kits for this?

Hey thanks! What's the quality of TRW stuff compared to OEM? Price is half of what OEM stuff is. Not against using aftermarket at all, just curious =)

Garage List
I replaced my LCA's with TRW after buying my M3 last year, and they seem exactly same build quality as OEM. So far no issues and ride and handling are great.

Not to mention, if you buy them from FCP Euro, you get free lifetime replacement. So when the TRW's wear out, you send em back and you get fresh new ones!

Yeah buy once from FCP Euro and free replacements for life. I'd change them out every 2 years just for shits n giggles.

I’d buy the FCP Euro full front and rear kits along with shock and struts at 200k miles unless I had already done some of it.

Sounds like the noise is coming from an area towards the lower control arms. But definitely something to consider!

had a similar problem on a 328 and i chased the rear suspension, changing all the bushings/ arms to no avail, turned out it was the halfshaft/cv joints.

TRW makes the BMW ones. They look identical with the bmw logo ground off.

Yup, they didn't even bother to change the casting/mold, they just grind off the BMW logos and sell them as TRW branded, great deal for us to. I remember paying more for Steel Control Arms for an E30.

Shock or shock mount I think, because over bumps. Or broken spring common salt driven bmw problem with the captive lower couple of coils that sit in the grit and salt that gets caught in the spring pocket on the lca. Pa makes me think snow and 200k makes me think this is a year round DD?

Lower bushing on shocks where it meets the lca is integral to the shocks and made of rubber

A spherical lower on one of my McS shocks did this exact thing over slight bumps.

This seems like overkill. If he’s just now noticing one issue at 200k

This is coming from somebody who is a member of a “why not change it while you’re in there” 12 step program so I get the sentiment

Thanks for the feedback, I'll dig into it more over the next few weeks! I'll most certainly check this out
