MPorium M3 Aluminum Undertray - A must for M3s!

I was about to replace the felt undertray of my track E90 M3. OEM options were over $400 and wouldn't last more than a year. I discovered MPorium M3 Aluminum Undertray and couldn't be happier with the build quality and fitment.

deansbimmer make these, cool guy. Just be patient as they could take a couple weeks to make.

OEM vs Mporium Aluminum Undertray. OEM tray was cracked and one of the weather strips to the oil cooler was gone, causing a rise in oil temp.

Screws and Drill Bits included

Installed photo. I could've added more screws on the side, but these were enough and sturdy.

I highly recommend this mod for the same as OEM replacement. This does a better job at protecting the oil cooler, less likely to rub against driveway curbs, and will last the life of the vehicle.

On the OEM setup, there is a felt box on each end that sits lower than the main tray. I don't see that on the MPorium version. What is the purpose of that felt box? aerodynamics?

I too just put one of these on my car, and was also very impressed. A nicely made piece.

It has nothing to do with aerodynamics, if anything the Mporium piece is more aerodynamic as it's flat. You do need to bend the hard power-steering line up a little (it won't hurt anything, supposed to be bendable). This ensures the hard line doesn't touch the new piece.

I can think of a few reasons why the OEM is like that:

(1) The OEM central piece is held by these stupid steel cable with nuts, it's super annoying. The side pieces hang down to match the center piece for easy access to the hanging bolts and nuts. Mporium don't require these hanging cables, which is a huge relief.
(2) The OEM hangs down to be a "feeler" component, warning you not to drive further if you're close to a tall obstacle. However, the OEM cracks so easily so that is useless.
(3) OEM piece is designed to be assembled quicker, no drilling or eyeballing to fit.

I've read that the felt boxes are designed to direct more airflow to the oil cooler?

If you look at the photo on my 1st post, you'll notice that these have the same weather seal to direct air as designed. The weather strips lined up to the oil cooler perfectly, which is same as OEM as far as cooling goes.

The difference is OEM gets destroyed so easily, when the felt pieces crack or punctured the oil cooling function deteriorates. These will not crack or get punctured.

I'm not doubting that OEM felt's hump creates more negative pressure which pulls even more air out, but when you hit a single debris on the highway the felt cracks or punctures which throw that nice idea out the window.

So far, no one reported oil cooling issues with these. In fact, I'm sure my oil temp will lower as my OEM felt was cracked and one the weather strips were missing causing air leakage.

Side bonus is we can remove the undertray without removing the wheels. Just remove all bottom screws and out it goes thanks to the end L brackets. So I just leave L brackets attached to the fender lining when removing.

Here's what mine looked like when I finally got under there. Interestingly enough, the car did not have the Bowden cables--some previous mechanic had dispensed with those.

Not bad at all, does the bumper feel more sturdy with this attached? I am In the market for a new underpanel but I have a gt4 splitter and I’m really questioning how I would Go about mounting this.

It really ties the bottom of the bumper in nicely. At first, it seems like it won't fit--you have to slide the forward edge of the panel between the flexible bumper cover and the frame, the you mark and drill holes for the screws that will tie the panel to the bumper cover.

I don't know what a gt4 splitter adds to the equation.

Yes, way more secure as the bumper will be bolted to a solid aluminum tray vs a flimsy felt that moves around. You also can add more screws (included) than the instruction suggests if your heart desires.

Also, maybe I'm crazy but the I can hear more engine sound. Maybe the felt insulates the sound and aluminum amplified it. Hope others with it can chime in to make sure I'm not imagining it.

It wouldn't surprise me--I think the felt is part of noise abatement for European regs. Or maybe I just dreamed that.

How did you go about procuring your undertray? I've tried to reach out to Dean's Bimmer to get some info on purchasing one.

those cables ARE supposed to be installed with the Mporium undertray.

They serve 0 purpose for the rigid tray and nearly impossible to install. The 3 back bolts and the bumper bolts are more than enough to secure them. You can add more bolts to the bumper if needed.

deansbimmer feel free to chime in.

Which is the steering line in this pic that needs bending? This is one of those installs that you hardly see, but feel good about doing 👍🏻
