Issues with replacing entire hood
I had to replace my hood due to some unfortunate damage caused by an 18 wheeler tire tread. I called my local dealership and had them search the part by VIN to make sure they ordered the right part. I also double checked on RealOEM and the part number was the same.
Got the hood ordered and painted and fast forward to today and I'm ready to install, but it turns out BMW apparently changed how the hood mounts to the hinges for the 2012 - 2013 models. My original hood has bolts that screw into the hood, while my new hood has bolts that come out of the hood and need nuts that screw on the end. Ok, just buy some nuts right? Well another problem is that they don't line up the the mounting holes correctly, and I can't get all 4 bolts in all 4 holes simultaneously. Also it's hard to see in the pictures below, but the ball mount for the gas strut is in a different location. I didn't even get a chance to try and check that fitment, but it might cause an issue too. All I can guess is that the part number was never changed, even though the part was updated? And maybe they only stock the most recent parts now that the E9X series has ended. But that seems unusual. My car is a 2010 with a build date of 09/09 for reference. I'm going to talk to the dealer on Monday and see if they have any insight, and probably just try ordering new hinge mounts (and gas struts too, to be safe). In the meantime, can anyone else check their cars and report back in reference to the pictures below? . Last edited by M3MPH1S; 08-30-2017 at 09:33 AM.. |

Alright so yeah, they did change the part number, it just didn't occur to me to check that kind of thing on RealOEM - I mean why would you change something like that? Anyway, for others' future reference, check out the pictures below. The first picture is the parts diagram from RealOEM (when searching for build date 04/2013). You can see next to number 27, there's a greyed out 6. On the 09/2009 diagram, it's opposite. So the real issue here is that I followed the diagram without paying enough attention to the parts list. In the second picture, you can see the parts list that shows up for build date 09/2009. They updated the hood part number but then they just stuffed all the new part numbers right below it and didn't bother to update the drawing or even remove the incompatible part numbers. And then the third picture is just the parts list that comes up for build date 04/2013 just for reference. You can see all the new part numbers matching up there. Hope this helps somebody else in the future.
And to be clear, the matching part numbers for the new hood design (attached via nuts instead of bolts) are as follows: Hood: 41618056142 Left Hinge: 41617325939 Right Hinge: 41617325940 Nut w/ washer: 07149200945 Still unclear about the struts. I will report back once I attempt to install with the old struts first. - |

I think this hood is for cars with pedestrian protection. You might have to order a non pedestrian protection car. You also might end up with other installation issues such as the new hinge not fitting. Won't hurt to check all these. Just my observation. Also if you see closely part# 12 doesn't apply as well which is the standard hinge. Good luck!

I've seen both style hoods on these M3. In my experience- hoods original to the car have bolts, replacements had studs.
Also, To my knowledge no North American market 2008-2013 M3 were sold equipped with the pedestrian protection system. |

I know the OP was years ago but this was really helpful. I have a 2013 but picked up a hood from an older model and found out quickly something was not right. Ordered the older hinges, bolts and hood lift supports and everything fit perfectly. Just a pain trying to get everything lined up correctly.
In the picture below, the newer hinge is up to while the older hinge is on the bottom. Huge difference. Thank you! |

How do you like the Seibon hood? Quality fit/finish? Thanks for tip on hinges.

The cf is very good quality. The look is aggressively awesome.
On mine I had to shim my fenders with washers so the hood and fender lined up correctly. It wasn't very hard and I take it with any aftermarket molds nothing is perfect. quick pic |
