Valet brushed my bumper..need a paint repair estimate

Dumb ass valet brushed my front right side bumper last night.
I didn't notice until this afternoon when I got to my car as it was dark and rainy last night.

There does not appear to be any dent damage.

Any ideas on approximately how much bmw would charge to repair this?

I'd rather pay out of pocket instead of making a claim and increasing my premium if it's not too expensive.

Also since this is my only car currently..would bmw give me a loaner while it's being repaired? Luckily enough this is the first time i've had to take my car in for repair so i'm not familiar with the situation.

Good luck trying to claim it from the valet after the fact. You're supposed to inspect the vehicle before and after around here to make a claim

I would say 1-2k.... jmo. That 1st scrape looks real deep.

It's really not that deep and it doesn't show really well in the pictures.

1-2k??! really? wow..A lot more than I thought.

At times like this it is good to have an auto body buddy. They'll probably give you a deep discount on the labor but BMW paint is expensive from what I'm told.

Go get 3 estimates and get back to us

Will do. But won't I have to get it painted directly from bmw to get the jerez black color?
Will another body shop be able to order it?

This sucks! Sorry to see this.

I suspect you'll need to have the bumper repainted. It all depends on how "perfect" you want it to look after it's "fixed". I'd go to a couple of shops and get a couple of estimates--but guessing from past experience (not BMWs) I'd say 1K-2K...not less than 1K. Unless you're got, as another poster mentioned, a buddy who can help.

It just reinforces my "no valet" policy. If they're not doing this they're frying the clutch or _____ .

Go to a good body shop. Most BMW dealers send body work out anyway. Why pay the middleman? All body shops can get BMW paint.

I wanted to go to bmw in hopes that I could get a loaner car because this is my only vehicle. Unless a body shop could fix it within the day.

How long do these type or repairs usually take?

I just called my BMW dealer for a similar damage, about the same size.

I asked for a quote to replace the entire rear bumper, and he quoted:
$675 for the bumper
$275 to paint
$200 labor to install

The thing that I don't like about this option is that the new bumper isn't factory painted.

Going to talk to some body shops about other options. I've got a small deformation in the rear bumper. It's about the size of a quarter and pressed slightly outward. Anybody know if a body shop can reform the bumper?

So according to your estimate..it would only cost 275 for paint and 200 for labor to repair something similar to what I have? I do not need the bumper replaced.

Just saw something about this new Dr. Colorchip repair kit.

I doubt it would be of any use on larger scratches like mine would it?

That's more inline with what I would expect for your damage, less than $500. I think the posts stating $1-2K were prices to replace the entire bumper.

All body shops have the color code for your car. They just take some paint from a brand of their choice and mix different colors according to the color code to get your color. Then they tint the newly painted panel as close as they can to its adjacent panels and smoke some of that new color onto those panels to make it blend in. A lot of the times the paint doesn't come out a perfect match but its undetectable because of the blending. That's why people prefer factory paint over body shop paint when shopping for used cars.

BTW I hit some road debris last week, which left a hole on the bottom right of my bumper. The price my body shop quoted me was $470 to fill the hole and paint over it. They told me that they were only gonna spray new paint around the hole but clear coat the entire bumper.

Wow! A lot lower than I expected. A few years back we had a similar set of (very deep) scratches on our front bumper (Honda Civic). That was 700.00 (got three quotes too) to fix. (Maybe we got taken on all three quotes too.) I figured prices would have gone up. Good to know I'm off! Now I won't freak if something similar to what the OP has (or worse) happens.

You can get an euro BMW bumper body-colored and without the ugly reflectors for 2 grand (look for a thread on that, if interested). A good paint job should be $500 max. I'd remove the bumper myself and leave just the bumper at the bodyshop, not the car, but it's your call. Get a buddy with a truck to transport it to the body shop. And although ugly, you could still use your car in an emergency. I'd NEVER leave my M on a bodyshop if I can avoid it. Good luck.

Damn good tip!

I never would have thought of this, but, now that you've mentioned it--well, it's obvious--but I wouldn't have thought of it until after some bozo trashed my car. I've got a few things down (parking spaces for one where we're on the same page), but I'm sure I could learn a thing or two (or more).

Pardon my thread jack here....

I'm on a "you should start a thread" kick today, but seriously, you should start a thread called "Keys to keeping your car in mint condition" or, "Keys to avoiding bad ____ happening to your car"! Really, I think it would be useful. No worries if you don't want to of course!

Plus, when my wife says I'm being "overly protective" of the car I can say, "I'm not the only one--all the guys on the forum do the same thing...."

Lesson learned: NEVER valet your car. I ask every valet I encounter if I can park it myself. If they refuse, I park on the street.

As for getting it fixed, $250 sounds reasonable.

I had no option. It was a hotel restaurant and valet was the only option.
In the future though I will def be more careful.

250 is something I can stomach. I'll be hunting for estimates tomorrow.

I have Jerez Black and someone banged something in to my bumber and it had a golf ball sized dent in it. I had the dent rolled out and the bumber painted for $516. It looks perfect and there is no problem with the paint matching.

I did a search after a valet did the same shit to my front bumper. He clearly backed out and cut the wheel too soon and there's a big rash above the passenger wheel...*ugh* didn't notice it until I got home.

Anyway - just to throw out a datapoint here --- I was quoted at two places $600-$800 to remove the bumper, prep, buff, prime, paint, etc.

I'm going to do it. They're both telling me it'll be back to near-perfect.

f__k valets - I only do it when I absolutely have no other choice.

Sucks.......
