Living in the North East, it's nice having a SUV. I haven't had issues with snow tires on my M3 but also don't really drive it in deep snow. The more I drive the X5 the more I'm thinking about maybe trading in the M for a Sports/Luxury SUV. I always talk myself out of it because when I see another e9x M3 on the road it still turns my head and I know I will regret selling it down the road.

Just want to see if anyone has crossed that bridge and if they regret or are happy with their decision. I would love to add a X5 to the M3 but unfortunately that will not be financially possible at this time. I would most likely look at X5/6's and possibly a few Benz models. Any thoughts?
Had similar thoughts a couple of months ago. Had an x5 for almost a week while my f10 535 was at the dealer.

I can definitely see myself getting an suv now, but as a replacement for the 5 series, the e92 m3 stays.

Totally get it. I'm actually surprised how much I enjoy my x5. It could never replace my m3 and am reminded of that fact by an afternoon hoon. But the x5 has become a great daily with a great punch.

Is that LSB E46M track car still calling you, or do you think you'll hold off for another E9X?

I'd love it! Mike got with me last week, but I haven't heard back from him with more in depth details. I'm still finalizing the insurance crap on the E90M, so I can't make any moves right now as it is. I'll be patient. I don't know that I'll be getting back into an E9x any time soon. I like the idea of something a bit more...brutal.

But dat LSB doe...

Lol, I know right? I remember the first time I saw/heard that car - he flew past us on the front straight at RA when I was in my instructors car and I almost had myself a little moment there lmao. Once we were back in the paddock, my instructor drove me around until we found him so I could go for a ride in it. It's a well sorted car, and I've always had a soft spot for LSB. I'd be thrilled if you got it. You know I'd be down there all the time helping you work on it lol. I understand the patience part though, we'll see what happens!

I'm not sure but, I think Mike is still on vacation. I'm sure he'll get back to you soon.

Yeah it seems like it's well sorted. Pretty car!

I have some recollection of reading that BMW put an an X5M on a track years ago and it was faster around that particular track than an E9xM3. I’d be happy driving one. Sure, I might miss the M3 at times but in the M3, I miss spacious comfortable lazy torquey driving at times.

Yes. I sold my 2013 e93 M3 earlier this year and bought. a 2018 MB GLS550. It's a 4.7 twin turbo V8, so no slow coach, but no M3 either. That said, I haven't really looked back.

I have said that before, but my other car is a hardcore turbo E36M3 so the E90M3 is my lazy luxury car by default. I’d be happy with a 2018 M5 or a 2018 E63 AMG or even the prior model biturbo awd E63 AMG as a more lazy more luxurious car.

I had an E70 X5M and while they are quick (for SUV's), they all still handle like crap compared to cars. I remember when I planned to do a 100+ mile drive through the country backroads with friends in my M3. My M3 got a CEL right before that event so I had a 328i loaner and my X5M to pick for the drive. As a test before that event I took both cars out on the back roads to see which one I think would be more fun. I was surprised to find out that the 328i loaner was so much more fun to drive in the back roads compared to my X5M. Ended up taking the 328i for the drive and had a blast that day. No matter what the numbers say, SUV's are nowhere near as fun to drive as sports cars. They might have the mechanical grip and power to be fast, but it's just not as fun. Impressive, yes. Fun? Not nearly as much as a proper car.

Read my post above. They put down good numbers, but it's not that fun doing it. It's equivalent to driving a fast Tesla as your "performance" car.

Actually having similar thoughts as those expressed in this thread. I've had my M3 for 1.5 years so far, I hunted hard for it. But it's a high strung car that wants open space with no traffic and no speed restrictions, and it's glorious when you have those moments. Those moments are incredibly rare. My requirements have also changed over the past few months. I now have a house that requires hauls, and am planning on getting a dog soon as well (let's be honest, dogs love mud and water, so they won't be getting in the M3 after that). Kids will be more than a few years out, at least.

I have two thoughts going on right now. One, pick up a cheap Trailblazer and use that as my utility beater. The second, sell the M3 and pick up an E70 X5M, and pick up something like a Boxster or Elise later to use as a dedicated toy. I actually test drove an E70 35i, and enjoyed that car quite a bit. Felt more "right" than the F15. The E70 would let me have fun in boring daily traffic with the brutal engine. It would work while picking up a ton of crap from Home Depot. While going to the beach with a dog in tow and not worrying about messing up the leather seats. I wouldn't have to worry when going to, vacation spots in the winter (with a clear bra to protect the paint of course). Plus, getting to work in the snow is less of a worry, I'd probably make a bit of money on the trade, I would have less worry about the engine failing catastrophically and the fuel economy isn't much worse. Then later, a dedicated car will be fun and cheaper to use on the track, considering how heavy the M3 is. I can do all this in a fun car, whereas the beater would likely be far less enjoyable.

Am I completely crazy for thinking about doing this trade?

I go through these cycles as well. There are moments I think about switching to something different, something more sensible - a comfy AWD SUV or wagon, like a Volvo. Sure that's what a responsible adult, a family man would do. Then I realize it's just my way of making excuses to get into something new, to start a new cycle. If I do move on to something else I will probably make up excuses to get another M3 in couple months. The cycle goes on.

Could also buy a used SUV to keep the M company instead of replacing it

If it’s your only car then sometimes life gets in the way and the utility of an suv is the best choice. I couldn’t daily an M3 - I need a truck not just because of work but also for all my little hobbies and stuff. Sometimes it just makes life much easier.

All that being said I couldn’t give up my e92 M3. My F80 lasted only a month after got my wife an X5M - the E92 M3 ain’t goin nowhere.
