I'll tee it up for the new year. I have two track days left this year.... I'll be paranoid the whole way through those days..... : If you read their comments, they sure know how to drum up business..... This is their reply to the question of "are there any warning signs?" "If you are really lucky you will here a knocking noise, but most don't.. Most here a loud bang and see oil smoke from the hole in the block, can even lead to a engine fire." All the bearings showed significant and consistent wear, with a couple of them showing wear thru to the copper. Well worth doing I think. My cost was $2600 parts and labour

Excuse my ignorance here gents.....
Are the new bearings being fitted of higher quality / spec than OEM? Is this an issue on all S65 motors or did they change bearings spec during the years of production? Trying to access risk Thanks in advance! |

Problem: Tight clearances with the S65 Engine combined thick oil can lead to bearing shell wear thru to the copper inside the shells. Once you get metal in your oil going thru your engine, well its not going to end well. Engine oil analysis is a good idea but wont necessarily save you your engine from failure. Replacing old bearings with VAC coated bearings is good preventative maintenance. There are new bearings coming "Clevite" which are tiny bit smaller and thus give you more clearance in theory. Those bearings have not been released to the public for sale as yet but should be soon I believe. The old bearings in 2007-2009 M3 S65 engine were made of lead / copper while in 2010 onwards model the new bearings are made of tin / aluminium.

Yes, it seems to be bearing tolerance and most of the wear is probably done on cold start due to thick oil. My tolerance is now enlarged, I think to .002" so flows much better.

Great read, thank you guys. BMW OEM bearings have been an issue on a few engines now. Bad for business, very bad for business.

yes that has been discussed in depth and some owners have moved to thinner oil particularly if you live in cold climate.

Guys. Looking to order a set of the be bearing myself and have tossed up between stock or arp rod bolts. Apparently the guys in the us are saying the arp bolts can make the bearings out of round due to different clamping forces etc and that stock bolts are the safer more trusted option. Obviously the stock bolts take longer to install due to the tty process. Any opinions on this and thoughts how much longer it would take? Planning to get this work done by Mike weber soon hopefully. Cheers. Javed.
