These posts are all baby S65's still. These cars will go 100,000X3 without engine overhaul if you just take care of them. Enjoy don't stress.

2008 sedan 6 MT 101k, stage 1 TSS supercharger installed at 50k.
Original rod bearings, clutch etc. No ticking but am concerned about the rod bearings after reading about it in the posts. Took an oil sample from the last oil change and just got the results back from Blackstone labs. It appears I should be starting to be concerned, so will change them soon. |

Meticulously maintained 2008 6spd SG purchased with 111k . BE bearings and new throttle actuators replaced at 99k by previous owner. ( original bearings looked good and were provided) Gintani stage 2.5 Supercharger installed at 113k. Now At 115k as we speak on what I believe is original clutch. Couldn't be happier she runs like an wild animal!! .. wish I could figure out how to post pics

03/08 build here bought mine last year. Car is on its second engine as the first one threw a rod due to rod bolt coming loose. As far as i know it had original rod bearings when shop took it apart to see what happen. Car now has a 11 block over hauled with wpc treated bearings and new main bearings as well. Head was sent to get rebuilt. Car now has 96k and 12k on this engine. Factory 08 clutch factory throttle actuators.

I guess I should add to this thread. I apologize ahead of time for the long post The odometer on my 08 E90 6MT currently reads 113500. I have owned the car for a year and a half, purchased it with 83000. 4th owner, but the car was super clean when I bought it, all maintenance records, and even got to have a long conversation with the mechanic who had personally serviced the car it’s entire life as it was continuously bought and sold through the same BMW dealer in Richmond, VA - until I brought it to it's forever home in Greenville. This has been a very reliable car for me, and I drive the hell out of it. Road trips, track days, commuting… but… I do obsessively maintain it. I do my damndest to stay ahead of possible issues, and I immediately correct anything that breaks. Replaced rod bearings a few months after buying the car. All that being said, below is a break down of what has failed on the car during my ownership, full disclosure. I have fixed all of these things myself, so, monetary costs have been relatively minimal. For the record, and despite the list below - every day I look at my car and I can't help but smile. When I drive it, I almost MORE than smile... lol... it's love 1. Cylinder 1 coil pack. Cylinder 4 was on it’s way out too. When cylinder 1 coil pack crapped out I got a CEL. The engine felt rough, and I didn’t want to mess around, so I called a tow truck. Once the car was back to my garage, I decided to go ahead and replace all the coil packs at the same time, it seemed like the smart thing to do. Did spark plugs as well, as the current ones had 40k miles on them per the service records. 2. Deflection pulley - I had a deflection pulley fail which subsequently tore up my auxiliary belt. There was no warning noise or anything, and I thought that failing pulleys were always kind of loud, but The timing was a little intense because I felt something fucked up happen up front in the car, then I suddenly lost power steering on a dark curvy mountain road… like right on the edge of a freaking cliff lol. But, I gained control, pulled over at the nearest gas station, and towed the car home. I just don’t screw around when my car is stopped on the side of a road. I call a flat bed tow truck. Replacing the pulley and belt (went ahead and replaced both belts actually) was not a hard job, except for removing, and then (for fuck’s sake LOL) putting back in… the radiator fan. It’s kind of a bitch. Just a head’s up lol. 3. Window regulator - this is kind of funny actually because the damn thing broke during the worst cold stretch of last winter. I heard the cable snap, then the window sunk into the door. It was like 30 degrees outside. I got the car home, safe to the garage, and left it there. Ordered a replacement window regulator, then installed it… in my unheated garage, with a tiny space heater on full blast, when it was like 15 degrees outside lmao. It was arguably a less than ideal situation at the time, but I got it done, and I can look back and laugh now. 4. Water pump - this did not actually fail, but, I heard a faint, low pitched, whining noise coming from the front of my engine one day. I left the car to idle and I opened up the hood to shine a light in there to see what was making the noise. It was distinctly coming from the front of the engine. I had a mechanic friend there with me and he said — Mary, look how the WP pulley is wobbling. Probably want to replace the WP soon. So, I did. That along with the thermostat and temp sensor. I parked the car and did not drive it again for a week until my parts came it. Then, took my time over a weekend to do the work. The whining noise went away after that, so I assume I fixed it. Kept an eye on it for weeks after that to make sure there were no coolant leaks. Good to go. While I was in there I checked on whatever cooling system hoses I had access to and was pleasantly surprised by the condition of them. Will likely finish replacing the rest of my cooling system soon, maybe this winter, just to be safe. The truth of it matter is this - I love this car. I fell in love with it the first time I drove it. The S65 did it for me, and it still does. I don’t think anything can change that. It just goes to show that even if you are having car trouble, it doesn’t really matter if you love the car anyways and enjoy working on it. It reminds me of that saying - “Love your work and never work a day in your life.” But, it’s like - Love your car, and never work a day in your life (while working on your car) |

Thanks!
I guess most people wouldn’t consider having to tow a car twice in a year and a half “reliable”, but, to be fair - both times I called a tow truck I had a couple different friends recommend I try to just limp home and that it would probably be okay. I just chose not to. And, I mean, it’s a 10 year old, high performance BMW, with 100k+ miles on it. I expect things to occasionally fail. For the amount of hard driving I do, I think the rate and types of failure have been acceptable. This car has been to 9 states from GA to NY, and west to TN and OH. It has done 15 track days at 6 different tracks. In the grand scheme of things, I think the parts that have actually failed are not that big of a deal. A coil pack, a pulley, and a window regulator, all of which were relatively cheap and easy fixes. I expect many more enjoyable years out of this car. |
