What does Exhaust Valve Open mean?

I've been researching exhaust systems for my M3, but I keep coming across demonstrations of valve open/closed. I've searched the internet but can't find anyone to explain what this means. It's like people expect you to already know. Can someone explain what this is?

There are a couple exhaust options on the market such as Innotech, Amrytrix, Evolve, etc that have muffler sections with a loud and quiet mode (Open/closed).
This enables you to have a crazy loud exhaust but have the ability to quiet it down if your parents are in the car or if its late and you dont want to be that guy around your neighborhood.

Similar to a electric or vacuum actuated exhaust cut out if you've seen one of those.

Valves open/closed = Louder/quieter .

A standard exhaust doesn't typically have valves. On some cars like Corvettes they do have valves from the factory that open upon startup and above 50% throttle apply and make the exhaust significantly louder.

For our cars they do not have any valves from the factory in the exhaust. Aftermarket systems you can get the same as factory with no valve. They also make systems with valves that open up with the push of a button so your car can be loud or quiet as you choose. It's a nice feature but expensive and another moving part that could potentially fail.

no, you'll cause problems. all a valve is designed to do is reroute exhaust gasses through an open exhaust pipe or through a silencer.

if you don't have any kind of silencer, adding valves isn't going to do anything.
