I have a friend who ran re71rs and NT01s on back to back sessions on the same day. He was consistently faster with the re71rs. It may be that the re71rs are just more suitable to his car (e46) or his driving style. Or it may be that the re71rs are just a faster tire. He's going to give the nt01s another shot to try to be sure what works better for him.

I love the nt01s and don't really want to switch, but I'm definitely considering it. If the re71rs are faster, have better treadwear ratings, and can be used on the street and in the rain, why bother with nt01?
The thing for me is how long each tire hold up in performance. Is rather have the one that is consistent for longer than one that is great but dies quick. Not worried about a millisecond.

But my question was more about same car similar tires and a five second differential.

He either got some supporting mods (which they say the car is barely modded) or he got that much better in a year.

Maybe (and I would at least bet on some driver improvement over a year). Or maybe the tires are that much faster (which was my point above). The difference my friend saw was consistently about 2 seconds (which I understand is not 5, but still...) and the only change was the tires. Or maybe it's a blend of the two.

I will be shocked if the re71rs die significantly quicker than the nt01s (if they do indeed wear faster, which I also doubt). So far, both have survived multiple track days very admirably.

Redpriest would know he started on re71 and switched to nt01.

I also have a few friends who corded re71 in a couple days

His latest tests suggest a 0.1 second differential at Laguna. And he was supposed to be a great driver already

He's driving pretty can quick on his Laguna video that I don't think a year brought him that much up in skill level. Perhaps if he just started dedicating to driving since that point. Or maybe first time at buttonwillow.

Ok. And aren't there several people on here who go through nt01s quickly?

I'm just saying that I don't believe there is much of a difference in wear. The set of re71rs I'm talking about have been used for 4.5 track days (by a good and fast driver) and they have many more to go.

Look, for now, I'm on nt01s. I'm just giving an observation about a potential time differential between the two, which I thought was your initial question.

Let's touch on this heat cycling stuff for a second. First of all, unless Nitto/Toyo have changed their rubber compound, you don't need to heat cycle their tires. However, it won't hurt if you do....BUT, let's do it right.

To properly heat cycle a set of tires, follow Hoosier's procedure:

http://www.hoosierdirect.com/Tire_Heat_Cycle.html

Quote:
Heat cycling race tires breaks the uneven bonds of a new tire and allowing them to reform in a more uniform manner. As a result the tire compound is stronger thus more resistant to wear and handles more consistently throughout a track session.
It won't hurt to do it, but it's not necessary for NT01s, 888s, RA1s, etc.

OK. Our friends are obviously having different experiences with these tires.

I'm not trying to push the re71rs on you (or anyone). You asked what could lead to a 5 second difference in lap times and I suggested that the re71rs may be part of that improvement. Whether the re71rs wear quicker, and, if so, whether the potential improvement lap times is worth the difference in wear, are different questions.

So long as the wear is not significantly worse (which has been my observation), the re71rs seem to be worth a shot to me. And, of course, they will be better vs the nt01s for street driving and driving street or track in the rain.

I think you are misreading.

Same driver

2014 buttonwillow maxxis rc1 vs nt01. 2 minute laps.

2015 re71 vs star spec 1:55 vs 1:56 or so.

Kind of hard to believe in street tires in a stock car with supposedly a subwoofer in the trunk lol

I can't really fairly compare the RE-71R to the Nitto NT01s. I'm improved since switching the tires quite a bit, at least in terms of car control. It's also gotten quite a bit warmer since I set my best times on RE-71Rs.

I set my PB time at Buttonwillow on RE-71Rs - about 2:00 even with Euro MDM. Best I have done on NT01 is 2:02.6 or so, DSC off. I actually found my times to be worse on NT01 with Euro MDM on - it intervened way more than it did on the bridgestones. I did set better times at ACS with NT01, but I had like 10-12 more track days of experience the next time I hit ACS. Who knows!

I think they require different driving styles, at least that's what I got out of Andrie's article.

I got 6 days max out of the RE-71Rs, but it required heroic measures of flipping and swapping. NT01s lasted about 4.5 days - they corded on the 5th day and I managed to complete the day, wouldn't do it again knowing what I know after I dismounted them, lol. Did nothing but rotate NT01s.

The RE-71Rs have a directional pattern and I didn't feel comfortable running them in the opposite direction (even though I did for a couple sessions - didn't feel right in the tires, but the tires were a little off balance to begin with).

RE-71Rs cost me about 1200 total including mounting and balancing, NT01s cost $900 total. I may try the Bridgestones again, it's a great tire. I love the drama of the NT01s though, the howling noise they make is a riot.

I like the nt01s, but this review would further lead me toward giving the re71rs a shot. Seem faster (at least on one track) and they lasted longer.

Keep in mind the time I set was in like 50-60 degree weather in January. My best NT01 time is set in March April where it was at least 20 degrees hotter, and my car had issues too - not a fair comparison.

That being said, I would love to try RE-71R again at some point. They never treated me wrong - well except for that one time where one of my tire's sidewalls blew up on the way to the track, but that was a one off

We're winding up for Round 4 at Auto Club Speedway on the 28th. Bimmer Challenge banners just arrived from Maxxis Tire and will be given to anyone that registers for Bimmer Challenge. These are completely optional, of course, but they do look great and guaranteed to drop lap times! :P

We also have prizes from Koyorad Cooling that showed up as well. All registered drivers for Bimmer Challenge will get a free Koyo funnel and all podium finishers of each class will get Koyo tee shirts along with a new trophy design we're working on.

Tony, Elie and myself will be pitted under the Eibach canopies as usual. If you're new to Bimmer Challenge and have questions, come say hi.

Make sure everyone fills out a competition form during registration the morning of the event. Clicking the Bimmer Challenge box online does nothing but give us an idea of who is competing. I keep a copy already filled in on my computer and print it out before each event. See attached for a blank comp form you can save.
