E9x M3 GKN LSD - Repair Information
So I have this really nice looking GKN LSD core from the M3 as I am just trying out a ZF carrier. It has the typical play on the non-crown-gear side.
RacingDiffs.com sells a refurbishment kit that has 8 clutches and a "free-playfix shim". It is not an unreasonable price. I was considering refreshing the GKN carrier but, as with all things BMW these days, the carrier is a bit freaky. My question is: does anyone know how to take this carrier apart? It looks like a special tool is needed to take it apart. Any chance anyone knows how to deal with the ball-lock thinger? I miss the days when we were expected to actually repair things, not just throw them away... Thank you in advance for any help. Cheers,

Apparently you drill out the ball, build a special tool and then once you reassembled it, you weld where the ball was. At least that is what RacingDiffs recommends.
That sounds like some German fool had too much beer... I am going to think this through a bit...

Or drill out the ball to open. Then heat a small ball and drop it in to seal it on close.
