Thanks guys!

Yup, that's you in the background. Thought it was cool to see another E9x M3 chillin' in the background.

I just realized that today, this thread went past 300,000 views. Wow.

My first days on this forum in 2012 were spent trying to absorb as much information as I could from others who were willing to share their experiences. I knew nothing about motorsport. But I was hooked after my first track day!

Now, 9 years later, I'm in the midst of prepping for my second trip to COTA to compete in a time attack event. Believe me when I tell you----that is never lost on me.

This seems like a good moment to talk about the companies that are supporting me this year.

-Titan 7 continues to support me in 2021. I can't say enough nice things about T7. Great products and nice guys.

-Sparco is supporting me with safety equipment. I've been a Sparco customer for years. My suit, shoes and harnesses have always been Sparco. I've gotten to know them in recent times and they've been awesome. The director of sales and marketing has begun tracking a really nice E90 M3! (You know that steering wheel that solved my shifting problems? It came from his car.) Anyway, really appreciate the Sparco guys.

And I have a cool announcement for COTA----I've hired OG Shark Motorsport to do the tech support at COTA! Last year, Jason's tech was hanging out as a spectator and he jumped in to help me when I was struggling with tech issues. It made sense to make it official this year. And now that they have a new shop, it will be fun to get the word out on their new venture.

This marks the first time I will be adding sponsor logos to the car. Titan7 and Sparco will be on there for the year. And I will run the OG Shark Motorsport logo at COTA.

COTA is looking to be a very social event. (I'll be wearing my mask.....) Chris (fsmtnbiker) and I will be sharing a garage. It will be cool to have both E9x M3s housed in the same garage. It's looking like a bunch of people will be coming down to hang out.

Anyway, there's all sorts of stuff going as I'm trying to wrap up prep for Texas. I've decided to go down one more step on spring rate in the rear. I've got a fabrication project still going on. I've replaced the winch in my trailer this week because the solenoid in the old one broke again and they don't sell replacement parts for it anymore. Got a solar panel installed on the top of the trailer to charge the 12 volt batteries in the trailer. haha all kinds of stuff going on!

My first big hurdle is to see if I can get the car on track on Monday. Would prefer to drive the softer springs at least once before going to TX.

Man......so much to do!

(Another Colorado competitor going down to COTA reached out. It looks like we'll caravan down to TX, which is cool. Always nice to travel in a pack.)

hehe well......the competition will be-----stiff......hahaha but unfortunately I mean the competition is going to be difficult. The 9 liter viper, the insane Evo, Feras' awesome Corvette and a few others that are looking formidable. And I haven't even mentioned the Lyfe Motorsports Corvette that is looking quite monstrous------and hasn't even signed up yet! hahahaha

Gabe absolutely has at least 18s in him - he's coming back with a better suspension, better aero, and better tires. And with more track time out for a skilled driver like him he's just going to be that much faster anyways. Really looking forward to seeing a sub 20 E9x M3!

Plus with all the sponsor decals added he's got at least 50 more hp this time

The only issue I could think of would be the grip level of the track - hopefully the snow didn't mess it up too bad and it rubbers back in pretty quickly.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out there - bringing my family out for some Saturday spectatorship. You Colorado guys have a safe trip down!

Man----there's some pressure building up here with the expectations! hahaha

I was laughing with someone the other day----I was like, seeing all this new stuff on the car is awesome.....but.....now I gotta do something with it!! Can't have a hard parked garage queen! This stuff needs to get down and dirty!

I got word today that HPR is a go on Monday. There's supposed to be a tad of snow 2-5AM on Sunday, but I would guess that could dry out on Sunday. We'll see.

Looking forward to seeing you and the family soon!

haha yeah I do enjoy "filing" my posts under some ridiculous topic heading.

The Super Lap Battle event is Saturday March 6th and Sunday the 7th.

It will be live-streamed on YouTube: http://superlapbattleusa.com/live/

Live lap times will be available on the Race Hero app or on the Race Hero website: https://racehero.io/events

I'm leaving for COTA on Wednesday the 3rd. It's a 900 mile drive to Austin. Splitting it up into a 2 day drive. Setting up Thursday evening in the garage. Friday the 5th is a test day. The track time for the practice day is only 1-4PM, so gotta be careful on how I spend the practice time getting up to pace.

Chris and I will be in Garage #14.

Here's the schedule I received. Don't know which Run Group I'm in yet, but I'll most likely be in either Run Group 2 or 1.

Let's file this one under: yep, old dog----new tricks!

So, you gotta understand----I grew up playing piano. I didn't do lots of hobbies and crafts. I didn't build stuff. I have never been overly handy around the house. Don't know a darn thing about electrical or plumbing. My dad didn't have tons of tools.....just the basics. I have never owned any cool shop tools. Never even really had room for any of that stuff.

But you put a guy in a big garage with a race car that needs stuff and all sorts of stuff starts to happen!

This week I took on two projects: 1. install a winch into the trailer. 2. Build new air dams for the splitter. And I'm happy to say that I'm the proud owner of a drill press and a table saw now!

The winch: The trailer already had a winch but the solenoid kept dying and Superwinch no longer sold parts. I refused to trailer to Texas without a working winch. So, I decided to get a Warn VR EVO8 winch. It's far more than I need with 8000lbs capacity. But it was the same price as a 5000lbs utility winch and included a wireless remote, and most importantly, it was in stock locally. The mounting footprint was quite a bit larger than the previous winch and now there were 4 holes instead of the 2 on the prior winch, so there was going to be a lot of drilling----all new holes into the mounting plates, all new holes in the trailer, a new support plate underneath the trailer. And the drilling had to be spot on because there wasn't much room for error. Enter the drill press!! Very excited to have this thing! The winch sits on three 1/2" thick aluminum plates with a total thickness of 1.5" to get it off the floor of the trailer. The drill press went right through that. First time in my life that I've been able to drill accurately. So happy. The install went well and now I have an awesome new winch in the trailer!

Air dams: I wanted to take a crack at making my own air dams with a different material than what's already on the car. When it gets warm, the current splitter material relaxes and the air dam sags. I've been wanting something a bit more stout. (I also wanted to have a full backup set in case the air dam gets damaged on track.) I had a template for the air dams. Found some garden edging on Amazon, and Chris gave me the link to some plastic material at McMaster/Carr. I've been practicing with the garden edging----saving the McMaster stuff for later. But I had no way of cutting it with any accuracy. So, I went to Lowe's and found an inexpensive portable table saw called the Bladerunner X2. This is the coolest damn tool ever. And voila! I have new air dams that look pretty darn good for a guy who has no idea what he's doing!! Of course, I have no idea if they fit because the car is at a shop at the moment.

Anyway, this old dog is definitely learning new tricks! And now I'm just LOOKING for stuff to cut with my new table saw!

Let’s file this one under: I always knew this day was coming......

I went to High Plains Raceway today. Had PERFECT conditions—-cool air, no wind, sunny. Had new Pirellis with me in the trailer.

All good——until on my warm up laps, coolant spewed on the windshield again. But this time I wasn’t pushing the car hard. Then the oil temp needle started getting really high......so I stopped the car on track since I was the only one there, and the track manager towed me in.

The consensus is that the head gasket is probably on its way out. I’ve been having weird limp modes in the paddock when the car is cold. The crazy temp rises. The spewing coolant is most likely a side effect of hot air/fuel being introduced into the coolant.....all pointing to head gasket. I used my fancy new winch to pull the car in the trailer. And then I tried decide what to do. I’m supposed to be on track at COTA this weekend.

No one could manage a head gasket job this week.

Then I was talking to Chris/fsmtnbiker. And he said, you know—-you have the E92 M3. The easiest thing to get you on track this weekend would be an engine swap.

Honest Assembly Garage agreed to take on the project, and so now we’re gonna do an engine swap and I’m gonna still try to get to Texas by the end of the week. I’ve delivered both cars, so now it’s a nail biter to see what issues come up that add more complexity to the job.

So, stay tuned! I haven’t given up at all on my hopes to still get to Super Lap Battle!

holy smokes... so an engine swap and a supercharger swap with a week deadline for variables. sounds like fun.

how does a head gasket introduce air into the system? i thought it was oil that would get mixed in...

another thing that comes to mind is high plains raceway is at a little over 5,000 feet. do most cars run a little warm there?
