About to buy my first M3, thought id ask the forum first

Hi

looking to finally buy an e92 m3 after years of paying off a mortgage,

i wanted it to be sort of low miles so i can actually keep it for some years, i dont mind the older technology in the 2008, but this looked like a reasonable deal, it has the carfax attached to it as well on the dealers website.

do you guys think it worth it.

Wow! that 08 car has 5 previous owners, talk about sloppy seconds!

Crazy low mileage, i wonder why it exchanged hand so many times.

IMO go drive it, listen to it idle, and be one with the car. Everything has aged in that car, so you'll be replacing and updating a lot of stuff.

It's going to be a big laundry list!

5 previous owners, looks like it was possibly modified as well.

I'd take a 2 or 3 owner car with more mileage with rod bearings, actuators, and valve cover gaskets done over that.

You'll be able to see it in person though and see how good of shape it really is in though.

I agree something with a few more miles but rod berrings would be higher on my list. The good news is you are on the east coast and that seems where the majority of nice m3 are today.

For low $30k range I'd personally be into something like this, in amazing shape with extensive maintenance

The number of owners have no real factor on cars that are seen a second cars, collector cars, or cars people hardly drive. The real thing to look at is maintance records and a clean car fax.

I agree with the above. These cars are often traded since people are starting to collect them and they own several other cars they drive.

I agree with “it depends.” But if 3 owners versus 5 in 10 years, I’ll lean towards 3 at the same price. You can take the 5 owner cars. These cars are only 11-14 years old. The idea that investors have been buying them and maintaining them like collector cars is not realistic. More likely there are a few cars that did not get driven much that drive up prices rather than collectors. Drive the car and enjoy it. I liked mine for 10 years and 80k miles.

Ended up buying the 08 m3 cause it had low miles.

It defeniately needs some stuff touched up,
First thing is it has 275/40 in the back and 245/35 in the front, is this an issue botht the tires are diffrent company, i guess the dealer just threw on old tires in the back.

Also it has an exhaust with a remote that sounds pretty good its probably straight piped. I was wondering, it probably has a tune since there is no CEL without the cats. Is there any way to find out which tune they did.
The dealer doesnt know anything, but i have the previous owners address on title, really feel like sending a letter to his house and asking him if he did RB and tune.

Congrats! In regards to the tune, I had luck in the past reaching out to the major tuning companies with the VIN to verify whether or not if had been tuned by them, might be worth a shot. Unfortunately, not really going to know about the RB's for sure unless the car came with documentation/proof that they've been done.

Welcome to the E9x M3 club

Tire sizes are fine, they aren't OEM spec but these are a common setup here. The fact they're different brands... what are the tread depths front vs. rear? If it were me I'd buy all new tires and get the exact tire size/spec you want. Mis-matched tire brands front vs. rear is super ghetto IMO.

Not sure about your exhaust but someone else will hopefully chime in. This car is clearly modified in many ways. The angel eye bulbs are clearly aftermarket garbage, the inner halo is illuminated while the outer isn't.

Congrats to the M3V8!

275/40 is a tad high (265/35 original, 275/35 common) but hey they'll soon be done for replacement.

Congrats!
I just bought a 2008 AW on Red 6spd Carbon roof with 90,000 miles. It's in the shop getting rod bearings now. No records means it wasn't done.
The majority of e92 M3s were Alpine White. Maybe that hurts the value. Maybe not.

Congrats on your purchase. I would reach out to the owner, worst case he ignores you, best case he transfers a ton of info, history, or receipts (and maybe parts) to you. I hid a little story about the car in the manual of the e93 I sold to transfer some of this information to the next owner.

You have a valved exhaust. Technically can be installed with some benefit on an otherwise stock car so doesn’t necessarily mean you have a tune. Fairly easy to peek under the car from the drivers door to see if you have test pipes or an aftermarket x pipe, presence of such with no cel = tune.

Thanks everyone, and good to know there is a lot of information on topics that have accumulated over the years, already broke the front lip, minivan infront of me hit a racoon and it just came rolling back.
I think the cats are deleted i attached a photo, and the tires i have in the front are contisport contact 3 and rear perelli pzero, the other day i stepped on the pedal and temperatures were at 10f so i fishtailed pretty bad, guess i have to change the tires.
Should i even get winter tires now or just wait until march to get summer tires once. Temps in Ny start reaching 60f in march.

That appears to be straight piped. You may have custom headers but would need to see another shot where the exhaust lines drop down from the engine.

I’m running conti dws+ all seasons right now and they run very well from mid 90s F down to the teens, solid in rain and did fine in light snow. I have a hard time imagining that my driving style will find the limits of these tires and will only put my summer tires back on because I have them. But longer term I’m just going to stick with the conti all seasons which is sacrilege here but I don’t track the car . So it depends on your driving style and how you want to use the car.

+1 on the Conti DWS06+ these are simply the best all-seasons I have ever had, by a good margin. Unless you are really pushing the car, like 8-9/10 hard, these will do just fine. I love my PS4S's but when time for new tire come around I will be going with the Conti's.

Welcome to the forum and the M3 family!

I just put a set of PS AS4 on my F90 M5 and think they are pretty good. From what I have read they are the highest performance all season tires. I recently drove in snow and they did well but the AWD helps. I have summer wheels and square smaller narrower winter wheels as well. For my 10 years with the E90 M3, I put winter tires on the stock wheels and summer tires on wider lighter aftermarket wheels. I like Michelin and Continental because they have a lighter weight construction and handle well. The Continental tended to be the best value.

I put some on a couple of years ago and have close to over 30K miles on them. Need rears now, but can get some more up front. Great performance for street and curvy roads and I swap wheels/tires for autocross when I need the grip. Research is out there that PS AS4 performs better than several “summer” tire options.

So i have this guys sellling me his continental extreme contact tires for $500 since he doesnt use them.

But he has 245/35/19 in front and 285/35/19 in back should i even consider it. Since i have the 220m wheels will the 285 rear be an issue for the stock 220m wheels.
