The new M1 0w-40

So i had bought four 6packs m1 0w-40 and now finding out they are nonlonger ll-01. Can i still run this oil without any issues up to 5k miles? or i am better off with something else?

Without going into the details of why, most everyone here will tell you that it was designed to run only 10w-60. Personally I will always use either the TWS 10-60 or the new Shell 10w-60.

But there are threads of people running that exact oil without any short term issues.

I'm sure LL-01 is not a big issue. BMW probably dropped certification because of licensing issues. They are promoting their own contract with Shell (Pennzoil) for motor oil.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have been running M1 ll-01 0W-40 on my last three oil changes without any issues. I was just hesitant without that ll-01 approval in the back.

I believe Mobil did change the oil formula, though BMW licensing deals could also have something to do with BMW dropping the certification.

This guy is worried about LL-01 when he's using the completely wrong oil in the first place.

The S65 motor was never spec'd for LL01 to begin with.

There's never been a clear answer about why Mobil 1 0w40 is no longer LL01 after the formulation update, only speculation. It's entirely possible that XOM simply decided they didn't want to bother paying for the certification/licensing costs anymore since BMW is using SOPUS for the vast majority of their lubrication needs.

M1 0w40 is still a fine oil and XOM's halo product. I would not hesitate to use it in a car that called for LL01.

BTW, recent discussion on BITOG about it:

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub...ng#Post4451836

Another good theory: the newer LL-01FE spec means that LL-01 is in very low demand now...so why spend the time/money to engineer and test something for LL-01?

It comes down to certification costs, which aren't insignificant. With the various viscosities and formulations, this was a business decision, not an indication that the oil doesn't meet or exceed the BMW LL-01 specifications.

0w40 is a terrible choice for an engine designed for 10w60, just awful. No wonder so many of you run into bearing issues.

Bearing issues are an engine design flaw. While 0w-40 is a bad choice, 10w60 does not solve the problem.

Almost all the bearing issues have been on 10W60. Read and learn.

my engine blew up to 155k miles because I was not using LL-01, 10W-60, or whatever.

OP, why not mix in some Mobil 15W50 with that 0W40?
I've had excellent oil analysis with this mix.

0W40 is better in winter as it flows better for better engine protection in cold temperatures. 10W60 is better in warm and hot temperatures as the thicker oil protects the engine better in super high temperatures like at a track.
