Comfort Access and two keys in the car

Still waiting on my M3 (it is now waiting to take a ride on a nice big boat).

So since I have nothing better to do than think about how I will use it and re-read the manual, I find myself with a real world scenario that I am curious about.

Let's say you have your two keys and you program each individual key to the preference of two different drivers and you have Comfort Access. When each driver gets into the car, the car does it's thing and everything is set for that driver. This is all good and seems not too complicated for my marginal intelligence.

Now let's say you and the other person both have your individual key in your respective pockets and approach the vehicle on each side of the car at the same time. (After having an argument about who actually gets to drive).

So here is the question of the day: Which key does the car use to decide whose preferences get loaded up? Does it discriminate based on which side of the car you are on? Does it get hopelessly confused? Or is it just the luck of the draw and you have a 50/50 chance that the car will use the person at the driver's door to set up?

I suppose in the case of 50/50 or confusion, you could either try to only bring one key at a time (not ideal) or tell your passenger with a key to politely keep his distance until you and your M3 can bond and share a private moment together

Any real world experience would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Good Point, would love to see a response for that.

I do not have a BMW comfort access, but the system in mine keeps the settings the same if the key is detected from when the settings were last detected.

For example:

Key 1 activated the settings last.
After locking, both Key 1 & Key 2 are detected.
Settings will remain for Key 1.

Can someone validate if BMW's comfort access works this way?

I think which ever key unlocks the door first will be the winner. Now I am not sure how it chooses which key if both keys approaches the car at the same time. I've tried that with one in my pocket (as my spare when I'm travelling) and one hanging out and it looks like it was sensing the one hanging out most of the time.

I have never tried this scenario, but I do know that the car knows which side I walk up to with the key ex. If im driving and have the key in my purse and walk up to the driver door, only the driver door will unlock. Now, If my bf is driving and I walk up to the passenger side with the key in my purse both doors unlock. So this would leave me to believe that the settings would be for the key that walked up to the driver door.

You would actually let someone else drive your car? lol Actually I would think if you and another person was coming to the car and both had a key in your pockets I guess it would read whomever's key that is closest to the one performing the task of unlocking the door. I know this for a fact when I am at my car and my passenger is at the other side and grabing the handle the door does not unlock, but when I grab my door it unlocks so the signal strength might not be that strong.

I have this scenario happen all the time in my 330xi. The behavior is somewhat random. My wife typically leaves her key in her purse - on the passenger seat. Usually - but not always - it obeys the key on the *outside* of the driver's door even if the key on the seat was the last used. If it doesn't work as expected you can usually lock then unlock the car and get it to load the correct memory key

Does anybody know what happens if you wash your car with the car in your pocket?

BMW does not address this in the manual? It seems odd as anal as they are about the engineering of things in general.

From the sound of posts, it seams all over the place. I can not believe it is random. First to touch the door would piss me off. My wife always has her key in her purse so if she opened the passenger door first and my seat would move into her position that would suck. I have never once experienced a "bad move" by the Lexus programming. It just seems logical and can not imagine that BMW would not have something as logical.

You've got big pockets, I guess (and wet pockets).
If you have the KEY in your pocket, however, I found the doors would lock and unlock anytime I got water or a brush near the door handle.

Yep, I found the same, car locks, unlocks, locks etc as you spray water near the door handle

Hahaha happened to me the first time and now I just set my keys aside about 10 feet away and there is no problems with that now.

I think it tries to go for the key at the driver's side door. That being said, I try to avoid touching the car if I am carrying a key but am not driving. Fortunately this does not happen often but occasionally does when we are using her car (E93 vert) or the X5.

Well in my old GS400 the dealer told me to try not to have 2 keys when opening the car door since this can confuse the car. I would imagine whichever signal your car picks up first it goes to its config.
