E90 M3 Timing Guide Failure
Hi all,
This is my first post, I hope it is in the right place So... I just bought a 2008 M3 Sedan, around 82K miles. 3 weeks in I started to hear a knock from below (I haven't ran 3 tanks of gas through it since purchase). I changed the oil and saw shavings on the filter. I have it in a German Auto Shop (German Auto Repair in Grapevine, TX, if any one has any insight on the shop). They dropped the pan and said there is plastic chunks in it, that the timing guide broke, plugged the pick up tube and starved the engine of oil. They are recommending installing a used engine vs the cost of replacing the guides and rod bearings (which were shot as well). They are also concerned about possible upper end damage. I have not really been able to find anything on timing guides for the v8 M3, anyone heard of anything like this or am I just a lucky one? |

Man, that sucks, sorry to hear it. I agree with getting another engine, doing the bearings and dropping it in. You may have damaged mains as well, so doing anything with that engine is a crapshoot.

That's the worst.
Is your car a 6 speed?

It is exceedingly rare to see timing guide failures in these S65.
If the bearings failed you'll need a full teardown and rebuild. So the shop is correct that your lowest cost option is to replace with used. |

I started getting pricing from the shop for a used engine and installation. Does anyone have a ballpark around what I should expect to pay?
I also found these people in Stillwater, OK. Has anyone had any experience with them? https://www.ghassanautomotive.com/co...bmw-s65-engine Last edited by acs76; 09-04-2019 at 07:28 AM.. |

No need to travel so far. You should give us a look here at Mporium. We are near you and are the local S65 experts.
We just built a new S65 for another customer in Southlake...small world. |

That is not good. Sorry to hear about the failure.
Only time that chain guides have failed on any engine of mine has been due to an over-rev money shift. They are usually very stout. And jut crap luck that they plugged up your oil pickups... Good luck with your car. From what I have read, Deansbimmer will get you sorted. Cheers,
