Braman/Hooked on Driving Track Event @ PBIR

There's a Braman/HOD track event on July 23-24. Any of you guys interested? The last time (only time) I drove that track was back in December, and it was a pretty fast track. It was raining the day I was there, but I still managed to hit 130 on the back stretch. There were only two M3s there that day, and I think it would be great to see more there this time.

If you let Henry, from HOD, know that you're a Braman customer he'll give you $25 off the $300 fee. He didn't even confirm that I was a customer, and he sent me a code to put in the registration. Let me know if you plan on going, so I know to look for you.

I am going to try and make it to this event, but probably with my 350z instead.

Hey... I finally signed up for the event, so I'll look out for you there.

Still not sure what car I'm taking. I want to track my z, but it is still up on jack stands needing a couple small parts. It hasn't moved more than 100 miles in the past year so I'm not sure a track event is the best way to get it back on the road.

I've been waiting for the weather forecast before signing up. But, we do live in Florida, so every day shows a thunderstorm. I'll probably sign up sometime today, in Group A. I don't think I'll ever be comfortable enough to drive in a higher group. I do this for fun, and not for the competition.

Let me know what car to look for, and I'll see you on Saturday. Should be fun.

I just registered. Forget that comment about the novice group. They sold out. I spoke with Henry, with HOD, and he said that they don't even have enough coaches for that group. Instead of getting a coach, I'll get a lead-follow so I can see the lines of the course. Shouldn't have waited so long. Let's just hope there aren't any GT3s in my class!

Here's a quick mash-up I made from some of Saturday's GoPro video. I had to put it to music, because the sound didn't record for the best camera angle I used. I'll get some video of the engine sounds another time. This was a lot of fun, and I will definitely do it again. It was great to meet askjeeves and DMD at the event.

Good meeting you as well. I need to upload my videos as well, but probably won't have some time until next week.

Are you planning on signing up for any of the august HOD events? I think I will go to the pbir event on the 20th, and hopefully my two friends that showed up will be driving also. Maybe I'll actually get an instructor this time.

Like fll335, I probably wait until it cools down a bit. Also, I keep thinking about what that instructor said about E9X M3s costing around $800/hr to run (gas, pads, general wear & tear, etc.). I might want to space these out a bit! I'll let you know if I change my mind, though.

The heat was definitely a killer. It took me all day Sunday to recover.

I don't buy the $800 / hour figure though. Though I'm not saying it is a bad idea to space it out. It is definitely not inexpensive. Bu just to do the math..And I'll be making lots of assumptions that are probably wrong.

One track day is about 2 hours.

Tires - assume one day wears about a quarter of the life of your pss. Full set mounted and balanced is about $1200. So $300 for tires

Gas - including drive to track and home plus actual track driving maybe about three tanks at $65 each ends up at $195

Brakes. Maybe $1200 to replace rotors, pads, and fluid. Use approx 1/8th of life (total guess) $150

general wear and tear is a bit harder to determine a figure.. Maybe $100 per hour?

Plus the event registration of $300

Total per hour about $575. Yikes. Not quite $800 by this calculation, but I still wish I hadn't calculated it!

At least we can get free brake replacents under warranty!

I think the estimate is a little high, as well. I'm just going to ignore the costs and deal with it as it comes up. I like your idea of tracking as much as possible during the warranty period, so BMW can deal with the wear and tear!

The next event that I would like to attend is one at Homestead. It's not as fast as PBIR, but it has more turns and a lot more character. If you go to PBIR on the 20th, you bringing your Nismo or your M3?

Homestead does look fun. Flying around the banking must be thrilling. I will try to go to one of the events there before the end of the year.

My plan is to continue taking the z, and making it a little more track worthy each event.
