RS5 and M3

Has anyone tried the new RS5? Sounds like it's nearly an AWD M3.

It's fantastic, great car

Extremely nice inside and great build quality. Sounds epic with sports exhaust too. Dsg is a good transmssion in this car

Turn in is surprisingly good, and the car is an awesome car for the street. Not as sharp as the m on the track probably.

But a significantly more luxurious car with better build quality. A good balance. Feels faster than I expected too.

Good car

Build quality is highly questionable on these Audis. They look good initially, but, in my experience and those of a few people I know, they quickly turn to crap. I had significant cosmetic and mechanical issues with my Audi in the two years I owned one. I've sworn off the brand since. I've owned three BMWs and my experience has been completely different.

Drove one and honestly wasn't that impressed, would almost prefer an RS4. Looks great, sounds great, but felt underwhelming to me on the road (and it was a demo car that they really let me push.) Even though it is, it just didn't feel very fast and lacked feel.

We had an S5. The fit and finish was much more like a CL550 than a BMW M3. It was a beautiful car.

We've had 6 Audi's in the family. Two had a significant amount of issues, the Allroad 2.7T and then 2004 S4 once it passed 75,000 miles. Our S5 was problem free while we owned it and a great car. I'd say the late model Audi's have significantly improved on overall reliability. I don't think i'd ever own an Audi older than 08' or 09' unless it was a project car.

The RS5 isn't as dynamically rewarding as the M3 but in terms of numbers on paper it puts down the power more effectively on street tires, and pulls out of corners a little bit faster.

I honestly think the S6/S7 with the 4.0TT is a better car.

4 doors, AWD, Faster then the RS5 and it has more usable power for the road.

These things with Intake, Tune, Exhaust will push 500hp and even more Torque. It's the perfect daily without getting into the RS7 which in my opinion is the nicest 4 door I've ever seen.

Aside from the R8, the RS5 one of the two viable motorsport oriented models Audi offers. Based on the reviews of the car through various sources, the consensus is that the car is fast in a straight line, but had the same deficiencies as the old RS4 (push, and weight).

Audi, why didn't you make a car that was an improvement over the past model?

The APR tune for C7 S6/7 brings it to 560hp. Same as RS7. The baseline dyno showed 480hp stock, not 420.

Current winter car is a 2011 S5 which is the best I've driven in snow and a great overall car. Agree with you, doesn't compare/not same class, in handling and fun feedback as the 2008 M3. The RS5 is getting closer.....

Jesus. Yeah I just realized the RS7 uses the 4.0TT as well.

I'm awaiting the specs and price of the F80 M3. If it's not a substantial performance improvement over the E92. I think I'm going to go for the larger size, 4WD and luxury of the S7.

With 560hp it'll be plenty fast too.

I haven't driven the RS5 either but it looks great. Given the limited production numbers though the price may stay at sticker. If so that would not make me enthused to buy it.

It has disapointed once again like the RS4 did to audi owners in terms of the power its putting to the ground. They never quite measure up with the 4.2 v8 they use and likely a lot of it is the AWd sucking drive-line power out by the time it hits the wheels.

So on paper its 450hp looks good but its putting down 350 to the wheels and the car weighs 4000 pounds. Straight line in any of the videos and the m3 really pulls on the car.

Corners the m3 feels much better so at the end of the day the only reason to take the rs5 is if you like the look or the interior which I agree both are beautiful and I really love the look of the RS 5.

Agreed though the S6 would be the audi of my choice right now

I agree with everything but your deficiencies. The RS5 has a vectoring LSD rear diff in the rear so they do rotate, especially compared to an RS4. What it lacks, like all previous models is overall balance. Audi's are just too nose heavy
-------------
In real world driving it's going to be faster than an M3. The cars are running 12.4@110+ stock, 12.1-12.2@112-113 tuned consistently. The trap might be lower but for all intensive purposes the RS5 is going to put down the power in every situation better than an M3 below 120mph which is not a real surprise with the AWD. The only surprising thing being, it is a good bit heavier, and it does make 'about' the same power. However on paper that doesn't really show, it's a mid 12's 110mph car on every run

Below 120mph? I would say maybe only up to 60mph, once rolling the M3 is faster

Only reason its running slightly quicker is the AWD launch. If any roll situation as evidenced by every single video I have seen, the m3 pulls quite easily from the rs5.

I drove them pretty much back to back. I really liked the RS5, but it didnt really excite me like the M3 did. Sure its fast and got buckets of grip, and sounds great. But its just a bit clinical, in both the way it drives and the way it looks. It just didnt tingle my nuts like the M3 does, hence the reason for my choice.

What I meant to say is, from a stop, in a real world red light situation, the M3 is going to need at least 100+ mph to surpass the RS5.

Not sure this is really relevent. How many people go from a stop light these days? Even setup races are done from a roll and practically speaking when driving we measure the power from already driving. So yes the AWD launches much better than a RWD m3. No shocker but from 20-30mph roll it would be lights out.

The point is the audi has 450hp but people forget it is 400 pounds heavier which equates to a roughly 40hp equivelent deficit and it loses more power through parasitic losses through AWD.

Its an example of having to give a car more power to compensate for a heavier car with awd.

Man if the e90 m3 was 3400 pounds. Just 200 pounds lighter than it is and had the same S65 engine, it would have just been perfect!

Yep and 600ft/lbs of torque!!

Probably low 11s 1/4mile since already 12.0 with 480hp! No doupt Audi has the edge on BMW when it comes to turbo engines!! The last RS6 came with 580hp and can be tuned to more then 700hp.

Bye bye M5 for 20k less!
