Low CPU speeds is only noticeable with heavy processing needs (e.g. gaming, video/graphics rendering, database). If you have at least 16 GB RAM (w/ PageFile size = 1024 MB or less) and a regular SSD drive, then you'll be more than okay with most of today's common applications.

I/O per second (IOPS) > CPU power for day to day use

My main workhorse (used daily for work) is still a custom built i5-3570k with 32 GB DDR3 RAM and 2x 1 TB Crucial SSD from 2012. No reason to upgrade anytime soon as I don't have any gaming or multimedia needs. Only component I've had to replace is the heatsink fan from the Hyper 212 EVO.

Cost of build was less than $700, so this has been an excellent investment for me so far.

I'm stuck with this laptop for a few more months. Your build sounds similar to the build one of my 16 year old's has. He wanted to upgrade his chip, but found he needed a new motherboard for that.

...I have a core2duo from ~2006 that runs windows 2000 (yes really) on which I do my professional bookkeeping (in a dos application), so it gets lots of use.
DOS is really nice to punch in the numbers from all te receits.
Its pretty much on all the time, having survived about 3 monitors (so the hardware seems very reliable)

I'm looking to upgrade though, but getting it all to run on w10 64 bit is probably a pain (I also need to print in DOS, so net use and such must work in a dos emulator)

Yes, unfortunately, the cost of upgrading an LGA1155 CPU to an i7 model is more or less the same as getting a modern BGA1528 i5 or i7 CPU. So if your son is in to gaming, and wants all the competitive advantage he can get, then he's better off building a new system.

I'd recommend putting in an I.T. request for a computer upgrade with your preferred specs, so you won't end up with another junker as a replacement.

The I.T. = my wife (and the bank account)!

I really want the I5 laptop I keep seeing at Costco. 16gig, 2 gig video card, $699. I'm saving up!

I still use a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 laptop with i5-3210M 6GB RAM from 2013. I connect it to a Dell 25" LCD when it's on my desk. I also upgraded it with a 275 GB SSD so it now boots and loads everything really fast.

I also have a Dell desktop from 2008 with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 that originally came with Windows Vista so I upgraded it to Windows 10 and an SSD, but it's just connected to a TV to play videos.

Really? I had a 1000, after a VIC-20 and C64. Natural progression, I guess. I then had a 2000 for a while but never the 500. In college I worked on the side selling Video Toasters. Sold a bunch to guys doing wedding, instructional, corporate video type stuff. It's amazing what my 10 year old son can do with our gaming rig for his videos vs what I did at 20 at the time.

That's awesome. I'd love to have one again for nostalgia's sake. Makes me remember paying a premium for non-interlaced monitors.

Oldest here now... Probably a 5 year old Toshiba laptop that my daughter uses. Upgraded with an SSD, memory, and Win 10. Works perfectly fine for her purposes.

I had a C128 but I wound up selling it back in the day to get some down payment money on the 500. I loved the Amiga the games looked better than anything the consoles put out, even the genesis.

My daily is a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro. i5, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD and 500GB HDD where the DVD used to be. Still fast as stink. No need to upgrade.

Oldest working machine in the house is Wifey's Gateway2000 486-DX266 running OS2 Warp. Still boots up and runs.

There's such a big difference between the core2duo processing power (and energy consumption) and the intel 'i' series processors, that even the oldest computers in the house have been replaced with throw-away i3's. (2011+).

Advancements in Physical 2 Virtual virtualization and free Hyper-V mean the Windows XP computer that runs one of my clients legacy stock management systems now runs inside a Hyper-V container, rather than on a Pentium-era computer (which it was doing this time last year).

That makes the oldest computer we use a 1st generation iPad which still works (on a charger) to play Spotify on the home amplifier. (2010)

Interestingly, due to the fact that my 3 year old threw my LG V20 in the pool a few months back; my primary phone is a 2011 model iPhone 4S - which surprisingly, still has more than a day of battery life and makes phone calls just fine.
