In other news, the oil filter housing got here 4 days early, so I officially have everything I need to get this car on the road. Long days ahead... wish me luck. |

Interesting…CP come naked without any coating. Alusil bores fare better with an abradable coating. Do you know if they applied any to your piston skirts. In the video Steve states that the reason he used Mahle Motorsport pistons, was because of the special coating.

Congratulations on the new engine, OP.
As a current owner of the Carbahn 4.6L, I faced similar decisions during my upgrade process. Ultimately, I opted for a complete replacement, including the oil filter housing, oil pick-up and return lines, oil cooler, and vanos solenoids. Looking back, I believe the oil filter housing can be reused after a thorough cleaning. However, I strongly advise against reusing the oil lines, a recommendation also emphasized by Chris from Carbahn. Currently, I've driven 3,000 kilometers on my stroker engine and have noted a few observations: 1. There is some piston slap noise when the engine is cold, though it diminishes when warmed up. Steve Dinan assured me this is normal. 2. The engine does exhibit higher oil consumption. After 800 miles since my last oil change, the oil level is below the midpoint on the gauge. Some users report consuming a quart of oil every 700 miles. According to Steve Dinan, this higher oil consumption is typical for stroker engines, although I'm uncertain about this. 3. Oil temperature runs slightly higher compared to the stock engine. While it used to stay below the 210 mark during normal driving, it now hovers slightly above that point. This is merely an observation and not a cause for concern so far. Please keep us updated on your findings. Looking forward to hearing about your progress. |

Very cool project, good luck with the install. This was just piston/bore upsizing, right? Not a stroker? Curious on pricing differences. Looking forward to the cams and how the motor reacts to them. What tune are you planning on running?

Thanks Darren! Exactly, stock crank and rods but 94mm pistons like the 4.6s use. With cams it ends up at $22k whereas a no-cam 4.6 starts at $28k. Will be tuned by Randy at Epic Motorsports. Curious how we'll end up.

Earlier today I was reading the related thread about the demise of your original engine (sorry) with mixed feelings. Interesting stuff no doubt. Just when I think I've come to grips with the level of financial ruin i'm prepared to accept to keep my car healthy, it's time to ante up again.
And so I found this thread. Oh boy. Yep, if my engine shits the bed, one of Steve Dinan's engines would be a nice consolation prize. OP I'm not too far away and hope to see your car ripping around the greater Seattle area sometime, or better yet at Pacific or the Ridge. Awesome project you've got going here. |

Had a bit of a snafu - removed my input shaft seal (which was indeed leaking) and thought I'd get away without any sort of special tool to fit the new seal over the shaft... boy was I wrong. Asked around at a few dealers and Indy's to try and borrow or buy the genuine one and couldn't find a single shop with one in stock. Took some measurements and the plan is to 3D print a pipe to fit over the splines and do the job of the special tool. Only problem is life happened in the mean time and I'm out of town for another 3 weeks 🫤 engine is ready to go in, the trans is what's holding us back right now. Soon. For reference, I'm making a 40mm long pipe with an ID of 42.5mm and OD of 51mm. The input shaft splines are 28mm long and 41.5mm in diameter, and the sealing surface is 50mm. |

Metal in oil filter
Thanks for sharing!! I am in the same boat after my mechanic noted metal shavings in my oil filter. I am leaning toward the Carbahn 4.2l as well. Waiting with bated breath!!
