E93 M3 vs. ??

I have read many threads comparing the E90 and E92 to other cars but as an owner of an E93, I feel left out of the discussions. So, I am starting a thread for convertible comparisons.

For me, the realistic competitors to the E93 (maybe I missed some) are the 911 Cabriolet, Jaguar XKR, Mercedes C63, Audi S5, Maserati Grand Tourismo; maybe the Mustang GT. From these, none of them have the E93's combination of value, performance, daily drivability, interior looks and functional 4 seats. The E90 and E92 are great cars for all the reasons mentioned in other threads, and the added 400 lbs make them non comparable to the E93, but in the convertible market (comparing apples to apples), the E93 really stands alone IMO. I can put two kids in the back comfortably taking them home from school, take it to the track (where the convertible performed surprisingly well and a lot of fun, even with the added weight) and drive home from the track with the top down, all for a fraction of the cost of some of the competitors.

Hopefully, other E93 owners or test drivers/owners of other convertibles can chime in with their opinions of its competitors to give the convertibles some love .

The M3 has been compared to all cars comparable. I think the M3 vs. section should just die out until the new generation M3 comes out.

Except for all the new cars that are coming out. Point being the 13' cayman thread that began today. I thought it was interesting.

I'll definitely agree with everything you just said - almost 4 years and 48k miles (about to extend warranty) and still look forward to driving it everyday.

Very early last Saturday morning (no traffic out) a brand new '12 911 2s pulls up next to me...(you know what happens next)...

So he has 350hp for a 3043 lb car - I have 414 for a 4140lb car... I'm in s5 mdm engaged - sport throttle setting (not sure if he was manual or pdk)...

2 separate runs from stop to 50... he was ahead by only 1-2 carlengths after each (I consider this pretty darn good for E93 given the 911 2s has much better lb/hp ratio).

Anyway - just a yardstick for comparison...

Agreed on all points. Turns heads for sure and is more than fast enough for sprited driving around town all while simultaneously practical enough to throw the kids in back when necessary. Works for me.

2 car lenths by 50 mph is a lot! So not close at all. After that he would have pulled another 6 cars lengths on you to 100 and would have walked you even more thereafter. 991S is a 118-119 mph trap speed car vs your vert wich probably only traps 110-111 so not even close.

And just to correct our info, a 991S is 3200-3300 lbs with 400 hp and is in a different realm than anything BMW makes. Its faster than the M3 GTS which is as you know the fastest M3 variant.

2 car length @ 50mph, you got walked, very hard. I don't know why you would even bother trying. When I drive the E93 out, I just simply put the top down with music on to enjoy myself. If I expect to race someone, I would take the E90 out.

It would take FI to beat a 991S vert, that motor is seriously stout..

It's not a bad alternative when you think about it. ESS VT2 kit, 540rwhp, room for 4 and enough power to pull a 130k 12' Porsche PDK

I know it's not close if you actually expect to win (which I certainly didn't). My point is that relatively speaking, it was closer than many (including myself) would have thought - stated differently - I expected a bigger gap than what actually happened.

How much would you expect a 991S to be ahead by at that point? 1-2 cars in a matter of ~3 seconds (50 mph) is a lot to lose by no matter which way you look at it. And to add to it, if he actually used launch control (which he obviously didnt) he would have been ahead by even more. The bigger (actually huge) gap would come quick thereafter.
I guess by my count, all Im saying is if you think 1-2 cars in that short of a 'race' isnt even in the range of being relatively close. Even a faster car than a 991S, say a GTR wouldnt be more than a couple to a few cars length ahead by 50 mph.

If you say so....

Given the overall amount of distance covered by both cars from stop to 50 mph two 991 carlengths is a relatively short distance.

As far as how much of a difference I thought there would be - cannot quantify it - after all - I had no idea I was going to see that car until he pulled up right next to me.

My point is simply that the vert being over 400 lbs heavier than other E9x models is still faster than many might otherwise think - and has way better times on fastestlaps.com than many would think
