E70 X5M

I am shopping in the <21k price range, and I recently was looking at higher mileage E70 X5Ms, and was wondering if in terms of reliability, how it compares to the E9x M3.

The E70 X5M is nicely priced now and sort of interests me as well but I suspect the twin turbo V8 is expensive to maintain in its mid life to old age. I do my own work but would have to learn it’s issues.

S63 isn’t a picnic. The later ones apparently aren’t bad maybe there’s an updated set of fail parts

Every X5M or X6M I tried to test drive used in 2013 was broken. All 4 of them. Never did get a test drive. The x5 50i was enough to convince me it’d be awesome if you could keep one running

N63 and S63 engine variants are expensive to repair/maintain. stay away unless you have an extended warranty

Common issue I've heard from my friend is a tech at a BMW Dealership is, that the driveshafts fail, mainly the guibos.

These are awesome suvs, but there are a lot of gasket and turbo related issues with the engine.

I had one for 2 years and had gasket issues twice under warranty. 3k worth of repairs.

Unless you are ok with potential issues I’d steer clear.

I now have a 2012 M sport x5 35i and its a great car. Much more reliable and cheaper to maintain while being a great drive. It’s my dd while I have my m3 for fun driving.

The E9X cars are probably the most reliable sporty cars out there. The X5M doesn't compare

I own both and the X5M is definitely more costly to maintain, but I’ve been somewhat lucky. When I look at my approximate depreciation plus maintenance costs it still put me below most newer leases and it is a blast to drive daily so I’m planning to keep it for a while. Just don’t plan on it being your only car because there will be some down time.

Yeah supposedly the S63TU's are much more reliable, almost N55-level reliable
