do you shift down to 1st gear?

just wonder... how often do you shift down from 2n gear to 1st gear? I find it necessary for a car with little low end torque.

Never, did it once and it's not really necessary, plus it's probably even harder than going from 1-2

That's crazy. The car can pull 2nd gear from really low speeds just fine. Unless you're autocrossing and trying to power out of a 10 mph corner or something shifting down to first is useless IMO.

can't say I've ever done it. Like the others, only going down to 2nd has worked out fine for me.

Never, unless a dead stop and sometimes not even then.

never. If I'm coming to a slow down and then have to roll to start again, I go straight into 2nd gear. I have gone into 1st while moving, but it's basically so slow the car is considered stopped

DCT will go to 1st gear anyways, regardless of S or D mode.

Forgot to mention I have the 6-sp manual. The engine stumbles if I hit the throttle too hard in 2nd at low speed.

For MT

Yeah,,if Im approaching a stop sign ..you will know when the gear box will accept a downshift into first gear..you just "feel" it.. if you are going slow enuff...I dont recommend forcing first gear under any circumstances

if I'm driving aggressively, then yes if I'm entering a very tight corner. has better power delivery coming out of corners than 2nd (I know, I'm stating the obvious). the car is holding something like 4-5k rpm through the turn though.

Only when moving quite slowly and approaching a situation where I need max acceleration or torque.

For mt

All the time with rev matching. At a red light or stop sign.
Starting 2nd gear from a low speed can cause clutch and engine wear.

When I had a DCT, I would do it all of the time.

It's obviously the hardest downshift to rev match smoothly. I read somewhere that Walter Rohrl does it all the time, impressing auto journalists.

+1. Unless you are at a complete stop, I do not know why you would shift into first gear.

I drove with someone who did this at almost every stop sign and red light. It made my teeth cringe. I can only imagine how the synchros in the transmission feel. I eventually told him that 1st gear generally isn't shifted into unless youre stopped...after a few tries, he got the hang of it, and now me, him, and the transmission are all happier.
