I have owned my 2010 E90 for about a year now. Up until recently I always used 98, usually Shell for no particular reason. I noticed that the engine ran very rough on a cold start, misfiring almost to the point of stall then it would idle perfectly after the obligatory 50-60 seconds warm up.
I had the car serviced in the last month by a BMW master mechanic (not dealer) who asked me without prompting if I had encountered ‘the starting issue’. I told him I had noticed it running rough as stated and he said if you run a tank of 95 through it the misfiring and rough idle at cold start will stop. Sure enough he was right! I kept running 95 (about 3 x tanks now) and have noticed a detonation sound at low RPM/high load situations (1200-2000). I’m assuming it’s the lower octane that’s causing the issue but anyone else with advice/experience would be appreciated. |

before I tuned my M3 with BPM it would also idle in a strange manner, revs going up and down. Once the cold start was deleted, this never occurred again. I've never run 95 to avoid pinging\detonation. Who do you use as your BMW
master mechanic ? |

same with my 2010 e90. on a very cold day, it might take 2 starts prior to cold start delete. it starts perfect every time now, used to idle up and down until its warm. such a shit way to warm up the car.

It seems that M3 V8 still benefits from the good ol Italian tuneup.
A WOT a day keeps the misfire away basically. FWIW, I average about 13.0-13.2/100km long term consumption. Tuned, with cold start delete, I think cold start delete may cause slightly more spark plug foulup as the rpm isn't held up as high on cold starts etc. |
