Purchased when I was 39-last year. Married, Mortgaged, a 6 year old daughter and 7 year old son in private school. We travel a couple times a year. But if I had no kids or wife, I could of gotten it when I was in my mid twenties. But wasn't really interested in sports cars then for some reason.

I actually prefferred the 550i or E550 ecept they were due for a major overhaul. If my decision were to be made right now, it would be for the new 550i no questions about it. Though the M3 is nice, I still prefer the executive sedan.

lol , well that's sort of what i thought of this thread too, i also do think it i more fascinating to talk about the m3 itself more then who drives it, how much they make, and how many businesses they own. At the end of the day, we are all one big M family.

Don't think from this that old farts don't buy M3's. They just don't regularly hang out in computer forums.

34 here, so just squeaked under. The high percentage of those under 25 surprised me, too, but I'm guessing the comment about these forums being mostly populated by guys my age and younger affecting the results is spot on.

The whole "mid-life crisis" label is unfortunate, I think. I'm guessing most of these guys are just finally getting to a point in their lives (with the bank account, with kids out of the house, or both) where they can buy a car like they've always wanted.

I'm 30. This is true. Or maybe our generation's mid-life is sooner than it was prior. ...this may be a good and a bad thing.

I'd think it'd actually be later, since most people are having kids later in life. I always thought of it as what a guy does with his money once the kids are out from under his roof (or our of his wallet, for the most part).

You are correct. I am an anesthesiologist. I finished med school at 27, i.e. i was earning NO MONEY until then. Started my internship earning $31k a year. Living in Boston and driving a Honda Prelude. In my year of fellowship after residency, at age 32, I was earning $42k and had a 1 year old daughter and loans to pay back. M3? Yeah, right.

Since I lived in New England, my first "nice" car had to also be something with good winter capability. As such, I bought an Audi S4 in 1999 at the age of 33. With another kid, we needed a bigger family vehicle also, so I ended up getting a Honda Pilot additionally. Then, I fell in love with the 350Z roadster, and having never owned a convertible, I sold my S4, and bought the Z. Great car, but just not the same level of sophistication as the S4. Also realized that I am not a convertible guy. Next, moved to the RS4. Again, needed winter capabilities. With the Z, I was stuck driving the no-fun Honda Pilot all winter. Then, when finances were more settled overall, I moved from the Honda Pilot to the Cayenne for a practical/all-weather vehicle that was still fun to drive. Didn't really "need" the RS4 for winter anymore so I sold it and bought the M3. That brought me to age 45.
