The real question here: at what mileage do these engines “wear out” and need to be rebuilt?

I don’t know but my guess is 250-350k if well maintained. Not many up there so it really remains to be determined.

Assuming bearings are replaced, regular oil changes etc..I’m really curious how the piston rings and valve guides last over time. Do people slowly lose compression and burn more oil over time? Very curious if any people have insight to this.

Unfortunately, I had a friend that blew out his engine on a 2013 M3 and it had under 20k miles. Babied the car all its life and no excessive revving. My question would be is when is it necessary to replace the rod bearings and which part would you go with as a preventive maintenance so that it won't happen again in future.

You answered it. As soon as it's financially viable for you to do so and treat it as a necessary preventative expense.

The lowest mileage rod bearing failure is 6k miles. Change them and stop worrying and drive the car line it’s meant to be driven.

I bought my car with only 19k miles. The owner was a retired engineer who took incredibly good care of the car. Spreadsheet of maintenance, blackstone tested oil several times, etc. Even with the low mileage I did the rod bearings pretty much right away. It is not a cheap PM, but as we all know the alternative would be much worse.

I had a low mileage car (20k miles over 9 years) with older owner. I had the bearings charged at 25k miles and there was considerable wear on the old bearings

Mine were not too bad, not perfect as you would expect from the mileage.

Certainly don't look good? Who told you they were not too bad?

If you look through this thread you will see bad ones. Mine had wear for sure, but were not on the verge of failure. Take some time and look at a few dozen pages and you will see what "bad" looks like.

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1262765

Bottom line, I was happy to get them out of there.

Yeah I understand, and it's a fair point. But ideally there shouldn't be any wear which in my opinion is the only condition that constitutes "not bad".

Mine are in the same thread though not sure how far back.

Edit - found my old post, and I was wrong changed at 31k miles
