To Supercharge or not to Supercharge?
You may as well ask yourself the existential question to be or not to be,
for those who know... the answer is a resounding HELL YES! Pimp your lady, put your kids to work in a sweatshop, sell your flat-screen TV, become a crack dealer, start gambling high stakes bingo, camp a busy street corner looking miserable with a sign that says "will work for supercharger", moonlight as a gay escort... Do whatever it takes to supercharge your M3 NOW! It was love on first drive with my M3 and the first year was a magical romance. M has all the handling qualities, practicality, and smarts I look for to go the distance, however the sex was always just a little timid and restrained. Try as I might I couldn't get that red hot Brazilian hooker who f...ked like a wild tiger in heat out of my brain. Had I known the joys of 50% more horsepower I would have married M on the spot. The car feels so much lighter and agile now, the difference is like night and day. This is what an M3 should be! I can't imagine any enthusiast who would not absolutely love the transformation. It's so worth the extra $12k it's not even funny. If your already paying this much for a car you may as well go all the way. The familiar M3 Cheshire cat grin will erupt into fits laughter and delight every time you put hammer down. The power comes on so smooth and linear it's extremely easy to stay connected to the road. This is my first M3 and I really had no idea what is possible with a little help from your tuner friends. I loved the responsiveness and feel of the NA V8 so the thought of adding FI had never really occurred to me. That is until a chance meeting with a fellow forum member in a red E92. He smoked me so bad I was like WTF just happened!? Thankfully he was kind enough to leave a clue in the wake of exhaust and dust, an ESS Tuning sticker on his window. I promptly hit the internet and began researching mods which led me to this forum and all the great information here. After reviewing the options I decided to go with ESS (they have an R&D shop in my home town) for the supercharger and called up Roman. He gave me some great advise and was very helpful in answering my questions. I went with an ESS VT2-600 since my local fuel is only 91 octane. My experience with ESS has been top notch, high quality kit with great service and support. I'm several thousand miles in and could not be happier. My only one small complaint is that my car now sounds like a fighter jet, oh well! Hope this helps anyone who might be on the fence about whether to supercharge or not, just do it already! You will be stoked! Cheers, Axis Last edited by AxisMagi; 07-23-2012 at 11:58 AM.. |

How does a supercharger affect the engine/car if you plan to keep it for years (maybe10 years) to come as a DD?

excellent with good track record across many platforms. The E9x supercharger already having several years under it's belt without major issues. It actually increases engine efficiency (I get better gas mileage) although surely it must add some extra wear over the long haul. I beat the hell out of mine and use it as a DD, plan on keeping it until it dies... Axis

good luck with the sc
but imo, if you wanna drive a 700hp car, you should get a 700hp car and the n/a v8 ///M engine is something special, eventho I'm sure it feels good, I won't get one |

What makes the S65 so special to me is the high revs and throttle
responsiveness. These characteristics are maintained with a SC, there is no lag and it feels like stock but with extra power that fulfills the potential of the chassis. The car easily handles the extra power and thrives on it. Test drive one and you'll see what I'm talking about. The risk/reward/enjoyment ratio for the wear and tear question mark is well worth it to me. Previously I was always thinking about what my next car would be, no more! Axis

It is a phenomenal mod, but is best kept for those who can afford to dump big bucks into their car without caring about it.

I would love a supercharger but struggle with idea of adding a supercharger to an engine that wasn't designed for it. If the car is going to be kept long term it's something to think about. I would be much more comfortable enhancing an already turbo charged car (like a Porsche turbo).... You may see me add a supercharger someday but I would have to get over this hurdle (plus have an extra $15k jingling in my pocket)

Not to mention that your Drivetrain Warranty is probably void and you shouldn't get further DME software updates. That being said I purchased the ESS VT-1 (lower boost) because I wanted extra HP on the track and I plan on keeping my M3 for many years. Time will tell if the S65 w/FI will last. I don't regret my decision and enjoy it tremendously.
