lutfy Tirerack shows a closeout on the old RT615k's for $169/tire. Did you end up trying those out and if so how would you rate them? I should note that I am addicted to the RE-71R's at the moment and ready for the R1's but not at $330/tire.

I've used them and find them pretty terrible. They are great to drive immediately and when cold but fall off in about 5 minutes for me. Tons of fun, no grip. I think the weight of the car overheats them too quickly. Also, much softer side all than others.

The RT615K was always more of an autocross tire, IMO. It's fine for short bursts, but I've never heard anything good about it on the track.

Hey Leo, was these the same tires I drove at WGI (on your car)? I did not like them either. If memory serves they were the older (non +) tires?

I have read mixed reviews about the older compound too and went with the newer Azeni+ ones.

Mobbin please make sure you get the + ones which are on sale.

I liked those tires a fair bit. They wear like iron, like all other R compish tires need to be careful in the rain. Like 36psi and ran the p** out of them and surprisingly they did not overheat much. Granted it was on a 2700lb FRS in 215 sized tire.

Since then I moved to a wider 255 R888R and LOVED the newer Toyos. I got them because RE71R were on national back order. They are faster than the Nittos. Tad slower than RE71R IMO but wear is fantastic.

Long and short, RE71R is still king of the hill lets say 10 out of 10. If you cant get those in your size R888R I'd get (9/10). The only issue is they HOWL and whine like a banshee so much so my external mic was picking up the tire noise more than the exhaust the pattern is not rain friendly but dry grip is awesome. Azenis are a rank below. They LAST forever (I cant wear them out after 7 track days and they still have a weekend on them) have decent grip and are consistent (think Endurance race tires for Chump etc.) say 1-1.5 second slower than RE71 and R888.

Here's the video of R888R in action. Allowed for full throttle application (always on) nearly everywhere on a 2915lb car with driver and 164whp.

Update on the R888R

They're mounted, 275 front and 295 rear on square 10.5 wheels. This fits without rubbing which is nice.

The 10.5 wheel is a bit too narrow for the 295 tire. 295 probably wants a 11" wheel.

Drove these from NY to VA last night, 8h. They are friggin loud. NT01 levels of loud. So, they are definitely not a good option for those of us that drive long distances to the track, where the RE71 remains the champion.

Tomorrow through Sunday I'll run them on the track. No idea of hot pressures, I think I'll aim for 34 hot and see what happens

Yo! No you had the last cycle of the re71r. They were worn. 31 sessions of life!
I'm against anything toyo but glad they work for you. Drew is struggling on them now. Also agree the falken isn't the best choice for the fatty e92. I'm on bfg r1 now and after one day at lrp I love em.

Ok, so full review from this weekend at VIR. Typical 3 day weekend and unfortunately it poured Friday, half of Saturday so we only got one day in the dry. PCA potomac hosted the event and as always they are phenomenal.

As usual, we had both E9Xs with us. One had NT01 in 275 square on 10.5 in BW TEAL wheels and the other had 275/295 R888R on the same wheels

-highway loudness: very similar to NT01. You don't want to be running these on the highway for long trips
-rain performance: pretty good. Better than full tread NT01

The whole weekend we were in the R888R-equipped car chasing the time we set last year with NT01s.
We spent many sessions troubleshooting pressures and suspension settings as the car was oversteering like crazy and all over the place. My brother and I are both instructors so we rode with each other trying to figure out what the hell was wrong.
Well, what was happening is simple: the tires were overheating. We swapped them and lo and behold, we immediately got the expected time.

Conclusion: yet another entry into the tire market that is still unable to dethrone an 8 year old tire. I'm pretty disappointed with them. A 295 rear tire should be considerably better than the 275 NT01.

Compared to the RE71, the R888R is slower, louder, overheats even quicker and has worse performance in the rain.

Thanks for the input on the R888R. Hard to imagine it oversteering with the 295 rears. Where was it loose (on entry, mid-corner, exit)? No understeer anywhere? One would think you'd be changing setup to account for the 275/295 stagger (i.e. bias more stiffness to the rear) instead of the other way around.

NT-01 is more than 8 by the way. The first set I bought was in the Spring of 2007 -- used them at a PerfCenter CCA event on my E39 M5 (FTD too!). It's amazing how long the product cycle for that tire has been!

There was a ton of over and understeer. There seemed to be very low grip compared to the NT01, which no one confuses with a high grip tire....

I hope they come out with a NT01R

I will say it until they shock me - I have never owned a Toyo I liked. I have 2 friends on Toyos now, both cant stand them, and they are in e46's - a lighter car.

street, snow/all season, track, truck. all are terrible. dont support Toyo. :/

For anything other than the track I use a single brand: Michelin

I consider Nitto as another sh1t brand -like Hankook as well- but at least they build one decent track tire!

Agreed, though I have conti dws06 on my truck and m3 now, and they are surprisingly good, especially for the money

On a 10.5 in wheel what size do you guys recommend for nt01? Will be running in the rear and would be putting a 275/35r18 in the front on a 10in wheel.
i feel like the 275 would be to small and the 305 way to big.

275 is the right size. I've been running 10.5 for 2 years now and all the 275 tires fit better there than on the 10

A 275 on a 10.5 wheel will be slightly wider than your fronts, which is desirable
