Snowflake warning symbol...
As soon as I turned the car on, a snowflake symbol appeared on the dash and a warning on the nav screen telling me that the temp was below 35 degrees f. and to drive cautiously. Being this is my car's first winter. Goes to show that my car cares about me as well

Funny, I remember seeing that once here in L.A. and thinking what the fuck is that? A snow flake...? Yeah I think last time it actually snowed here in L.A. was 1988 or '89. I was in 3rd grade.

The owner's manual refers to it as the "Outside Temperature Warning". When the displayed temperature sinks to approx. 37 Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius), a signal sounds and a warning lamp lights up. There is an increased risk of black ice. Black ice can also form above 37F/3C. You should therefore drive carefully on bridges and shaded roads, for example, otherwise there is an increased risk of an accident." In other words... Don't do anything stupid you jackass, the road is frozen!

Next time things start shaking themselves into rubble in LA let us know how bad things have to get before that warning light comes on. Now excuse me while I go throw another log on the fire. |

I was just discussing this with my colleagues the other day and I was thinking that it would be more accurate to take into account the dew point of the air in addition to the temperature (temperature alone is a little bit primitive IMO)... which lead me to the question: is the dew point (or relative humidity) of the air not measure so that the mix air/gas can be (further) optimized?
I guess they use more the feedback control loop (including with monitoring via spark plugs) rather than feed forward??

But the road can be below 32 when the air is at say, 37. In a sense 37 is somewhat arbitrary as the road could be frozen even above this temperature, and OTOH the road may even be warmer than the air. But 37 is a general temperature that BMW uses to alert the driver that there may be ice on the road.
Cheers.
