looking to get into wine

Are you keeping to sell or keeping to drink when the wine has reached it's optimum value? If you're trying to make money, I wouldn't know how to advise you. If you're keeping for the sake of drinking, I can say you will be able to find good wine out of any varietal (grape); there's always a top tier.

Your budget plays a big role in determining what to buy as well. And the varietal plays a part in determining how long you can age the wine. So there are actually a couple factors to consider.

I can give you some easy answers if you want. Buy some first growths from Bordeaux. There are 5 vineyards that stand out above the rest and their wines are probably your very definition of collector's wine. Just make sure the vintage is good and you properly store the wine. Not sure if you seen the thread, but I remember some member was trying to sell a bottle of Mouton Rothschild (which is a first growth).

If you are lucky enough have a trader joe's near you can find some great wines for around $10. World market is another great place to get most bang for buck.

I have been drinking red(or black as my grandfather called it) for years and recently got on a Malbec kick lately. I haven't tried a bottle I didn't like yet.

Trader Joes is a great place but stay away from the 3 buck chuck Charles Shaw garbage, some of the cheap stuff is real hit or miss but I have found some decent wines from 4-8 bucks. they also carry some fairly expensive stuff.

One more option is to find a Wine Bar in your area. You can order a glass at a time, or just try a sip first, off their menu. Great way to try new wines out, and it some cases, they make some, if not all of the wine on location, so they really know what they are serving.

I am planning to drink probably 1/3 of the collection and keep the rest to store. Considering getting something like this. A 30 bottle wine cooler.



Will definitely look more into it. Napa is just 30 minutes away from me.

PS: Save your labels. Wine marketing is such that you will never precisely remember the name of what you liked. And names and labels are so similar and creative as to be designed to prey on that...

Great info. You WILL forget the best bottle you've had, unless u archive it. And whoever's recommending Merlot as a fine wine has a lot of catching up to do themselves. Go with a good Malbec or Shiraz instead.

i hate wine and will do anything to convince you to stop drinking it. it caused me serious trauma, and if i ever drink wine again i will instantly vomit.

Collecting is tough. Someone mentioned to start with the top 100. The problem there is by the time that list even comes out I would guess nearly 60% or more of them are no longer available for purchase. Which is also why that list is kind of a scam in the first place. Wine collecting isn't what it used to be. Sure for the pretty rich no biggie. But us average guys it's not worth the time. Maybe buy bottles that require aging and that you fully intend on drinking but if you think you're going to turn a profit then goodluck.

This is a good website for looking up wines. You can find tasting notes for more popular wines here and there's usually a recommended timeline for when the wine is best consumed.

Go to a wine festival and try em all!

It's a lot of fun. I went with a group of about 10 friends to the Morgantown (hee haw, I know...) Wine & Jazz Fest near WVU this past wknd. It was awesome.. Everybody had a blast.
