Glasses Tray (replaces ash tray) for E93 Installed

Hi everyone,

Recently bought my first M3 after wanting one since the e36. Found a really nice Silverstone e93 and am absolutely loving it!

Immediately noticed a lack of storage for certain items, namely my sunglasses. I always use the USB cable to stream Spotify & charge my phone so no need for the cigarette lighter spot plus there's another port for a charging plug underneath the passenger side footwell.

I found this OEM replacement tray & installed it tonight, cost $30.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...k/51167132376/

Very easy to do, simply remove the center console by gently prying with a trim removal tool starting at the rear side next to the armrest and working your way forward.

Once you pop all the clips free on both sides, you'll then need to remove the shifter. I have a DCT so it was simply a matter of gently pulling it upward and off, taking care to not yank too hard as there's a wiring harness to disconnect.

Once that's free, gently remove the console up and backward away from the center stack. You don't need to unplug the wiring harnesses for the EDC or M mode buttons as you can manipulate the console enough to access the tray.

The tray has 4 star head screws, very small in size. Once those are off, it comes out and you can directly replace with the new one! Repeat these steps in reverse and you're all set. Took about 15 minutes, if you know the clip locations it would only take 10 or less. Very simple & useful upgrade, especially if you live in FL or another perpetually sunny state.

Hope this helps someone out!

Sal

Nicely done!

I personally like the lidless one even more as it has more room as well for larger glasses (and you don't worry about the lid not closing).

What did you do with the cigarette lighter plug? I'm assuming that you just disconnected it and hid it underneath.

Nice. I just ordered one since I have never used the cigarette plug and hated the lack of storage. Thanks for the awesome post.

It’s funny how many places BMW created for you to put your glasses. In the glove box, in the armrest, in the center “ashtray”, in the “handle” up above. I replaced mine years ago because I have no use for a lighter, but two places to put a cup and 45 places for sunglasses lol

Lol but I use all those places for other things! Have four pairs of glasses I do wish would fit in the console (hate leaving things visible through he window) that just don’t. I can get two on a good day and that’s just not enough haha

You can buy two handle replacement sunglasses holders, and stick another in the rear center partition

If you want to try something really advanced, check out this DIY on re-purposing the lighting from the cigarette lighter to illuminate the new sunglasses tray. I did it on mine and it looks awesome. Only difference for me is I drilled the holes in the sides so you can't see them.

I did the exact same on my E90 328i. Placed LEDs on the side, and even in the second storage tray where iDrive equipped cars have the controller

I still want the power outlet under the glovebox. I wonder if the wire is long enough.

I did this a while back and didnt have to extend anything, just kind of a pain to work the cable end from the center console to the glove box area.

I just did this today - I got the one without the lid as I wanted the most amount of room.. wish I would have done this way sooner! Nice to have a place to put my wallet and keys (or sunglasses). So much better than that useless ashtray.
