What oil viscosity are you using? 10w60/0w40/5w50?
I know there are numerous threads on oil choices and the majority is running Castro TWS 10w60 since it's recommended by BMW.
However, I have seen various discussions stating 0w40 is a better option due to the very tight bearing tolerances and other technical reasons I personally don't understand. I also saw comments that 5w50 is a good compromise between the other two weights and should be considered. I am not an engineer so I don't profess to have an educated reason for possibly straying away from the OEM 10w60 choice. I am about to change my oil and thought I would ask before ordering a couple cases of Castrol TWS 10w60 if another weight is better suited for our engines. This is NOT to save money. I just want to use the best oil for engine longevity and reduce rod bearing wear if possible. My car is a 2011. I do not track my car and primarily use it for commuting and spirited driving. If you do use something different, please explain why. thanks! Last edited by GT3fan; 01-30-2017 at 04:57 PM.. |

other: motul 15w50, much better additives to the Castrol, slightly lighter than factory but in the same heavy weight vein.

I run Mobil 1 5w50. Great oil that was just recently updated to a more modern boron add pack and LNG base oil. Not sure why you'd want to go to an oil with a higher cold crank viscosity than stock... 15w don't make sense on this engine

I have been considering Mobil 5w50. To the few who are running this oil where are you buying it? I believe Napa Auto parts sells it. Are there other major retailers that carry it?

10w60 but not Castrol. Using the Shell Helix kit from ECS. Pricier than most other options but car seems to love it. I've also previously stated that some brands just sit better with me than others and Shell is one of them.

Factory 10w-60 for now but would switch to Motul 15w50 if I planned on doing more track events.

10w60. Sorry, I gotta go with the BMW engineers on this one, I think their R&D budget is a little higher than mine.

No. So far, the only oil that I have found to be identical in formula to TWS, that isn't explicitly labeled as TWS, is Castrol Edge Professional 10w60

i was using 0w40 M1 when I had mine and it was great because it heated up faster. I sent my oil to black stone at every change and everything was always on point with no excessive wear materials.
