OP - seriously go drive a 200 series Land Cruiser (2008-current) or Lexus LX 570 (2008 to current). They are the king of all SUVs straight up. Look at the miles listed on some of them and the values they are still selling for. They have always had stupidly high residual values even pre-Covid pricing. The average Land Cruiser owner keeps them for something like 9 years. Longer than any other model car. |

I currently have both. I was in love with the aggressive looks of the x5m and the power when I had an extended test drive.
In reality, It doesn't feel as special as an m3. The turbos have a lot to do with it. If I could do it over again I would just get a regular x5 for the space and practicality , and cost.

For the folks saying the X5 isn’t much bigger… where do you get that from? I have one - it’s much bigger than an e90.
E90 is pretty small when it comes to 4 door cars, not that it’s a bad thing (I like smaller cars), but the X5, even the new X3 are a good amount bigger. |

They also don't handle like BoF SUVs of old like some of these people think. My CTT is not comparable to the M3 at max attack, but it would handily beat down my old 335i on a back road, even with tired suspension. It absolutely humiliates the 535xi wagon it replaced. |

It sounds like for both the e90 and X5 the answer is no. |

I say don't do it. I had a f15 x5 and hated that thing. Had it for a miserable 8 months. The f series x5 has a terrible ride and ac sucks so bad . Mine had 3rd row seats with the air rear suspension. Not sure about the g series though. I have an e92m3 now and love it. Paired to a model x for my 2 younger boys. I would say keep the e90 and buy a larger suv for 3 kids or minivan

I just got an F85 X5M and still have a basically stock e92 M3 DCT comp. No comparison. M3 is soooooo much better except in straight line accel prob neck and neck (but the M3 is a much funner experience at WOT) and of course the X5 has way more room to carry stuff.

That said, my Cayenne Turbo is probably the best overall car I've ever owned, and I find it quite fun to drive. What did I do with it today? Loaded it up and threw the dog in the back to go to the beach. Sat in highway traffic with adaptive cruise control and the stereo cranked up. Hustled it across the mountain roads like a giant rally car, ACC taking care of the traffic hang ups. Did some light off-roading to get to beach + trails site #1. Let the ACC handle the traffic to beach #2. Drove the fatty across the beach (even with all seasons on), all windows + sunroof open like an overgrown beach buggy slathered in leather. As soon as I got back to the road, took it out of off-road mode and threw ACC back on. Then I used the 600hp to crush traffic on the way back home. Also, only used 3/8th of a tank to cover 160 miles of that Not much can match winding out an E92 on a backroad, but the flexibility of the super SUVs is so incredible. That's why the Cayenne gets the miles poured onto it, while the M3 waits for those special days. |

The cost of maintenance can be extraordinarily high, and you definitely can't be afraid of a $2-3k repair bill, and really that should be the expectation. But I would say that the cost of ownership is not all that unreasonable. Having owned my 2012 E70 X5M for just over 4 years, my monthly cost (Maint + Depreciation assuming I can get $15k for it) is $650. Compared to a lot of cars, that's not a crazy all in cost of ownership for the performance. I am sure there are other SUVs that are cheaper, more practical and less likely to leave me stranded, but still worth a look if you enjoy the drive.

If paying $650 per month in maintenance, I would consider instead putting that towards a new or newer car. Yes, you would have to add some money on top each month but you can have a newer, faster, more comfortable, more reliable, better handling car.
I also agree that an SUV can be fun. Definitely not an M3, but still entertaining while having some practicality. I think the car you drive the most should be fun to drive. I have never understood why some people park their nice car most of the time and drive a beater instead. I would do it the other way around — drive the nice car and park the beater. |

You absolutely could get into a new X5M, but that will likely cost double in just the depreciation alone. Agree, you would get a car that is all the things you mention, though.

I agree with you on performance. X5M is very slow and handles like crap.
