Another member of the club
I purchased Isar, my 2008 AW M3 Coupe,6MT, fully loaded, in early November. (Can anyone guess why Isar?)I spent a year agonizing over what my next car would be. As I looked around the American and Euro's I noticed that Audi, Mercedes, Cadillac, Saab, and others were comparing their car to the BMW M3. They all touted their car as the one to knock the legendary M3 off the mountain top. Legendary M3, hmmm...
Well, needless to say, that peaked my interest and attention. Now, I've always admired the M3's but never thought I'd be able to own one. Hmmm... not sure why. Perhaps I thought I needed a comfort ride for my business needs and social status as a man who could now take life easy. Anyway, I thought to myself that if these other reputable manufacturers were comparing their car to the M3 then I should take a closer look at it myself. Now, keep in mind I looked and agonized over a year on my next auto because I wanted it to be a car for me. No longer concerned about the kids, or business clients riding with me or what my peers thought, I wanted the next car to be my choice. But which one? One day while talking to a friend I ask her what she thought about the BMW 5 Series. She, bless her heart went out and looked at the 5 Series and told me she didn't like the puny little single exhaust it sported out the back end. Okay, she impressed me with that little bit of detail. (I ask a woman because I knew I'd get a no BS answer) When I ask her about the other cars I was considering she said "I think you should get the car that makes you happy and fits who you are". I went to bed that night with that comment playing in my head on an endless loop. So the next day on my 1 hour drive to work I thought about what would make me happy. Let's see, at the age of 50, I am successful, very active and athletic, ex-special ops, I road bike, mountain bike, trail run and do various other activities that require a little blood, sweat, and tears. So... on my way in to work I stopped in at the local BMW dealership and said I wanted to test drive a BMW M3. The salesman told me they don't allow test drives on the M3. I said to him "WTF does that mean?" He said because of all the college students who come and want to test drive just as an adventure with no intentions of buying one has made the dealership adopt the policy of not allowing test drives on the M3. I ask him if I looked like a college kid and that I wanted to speak to the owner of the dealership right now. After a few minutes of explaining why I wasn't going to waste my time with the sales manager on this issue I was able to speak with the owner. I told him I understood his policy but was not going to put down $70,000.00 plus on a car I didn't test drive. I explained my year long search for a car and he allowed me the test drive. I took the car out for a thirty minute drive and absolutely knew that I had found the car I was going to buy. They got over the thirty test drive, lol, when I told them I would buy it. Isar, my M3's name, now has approximately 2500 miles and she gets better and better to drive each time I drive it. I didn't consider the M3 because I didnt see myself driving a race car and sifting gears constantly. But my friend convinced me to buy the car that made me happy and fit who I am. So I considered who I was, made my decision on that fact a lone. I will keep this M3 forever. One day I will park it and drive only on special occasions and I will buy others in the future but without trepidation. Isar is an absolute joy to drive and driving is no longer a means of getting from one point to another. The BMW M3 fits who I am and my lifestyle. Last edited by ISAR; 12-26-2008 at 05:25 PM.. Isar is a river in Tirol, Bavaria, Germany. It runs out of the Alps.
According to the most common interpretation the name Isar means - fast, torrential. |
