I've had better days not getting my ass f'd on the freeway ...
=(
I knew the day would come sooner or later. I got rear ended today on the freeway. Traffic was flowing around 50-55 mph but then there was some traffic. Every time I feel like I have to stop more abruptly than normal I peek in my rear view mirror to see if the guy behind me notices ... this time he didn't. I saw his gf sleeping in the passenger seat and he was gazing off into la la land. I knew he was coming in way too hot and that his car wouldn't be able to stop in time and I said out loud to my buddy "oh shit Dan" to try and warn him, but my mouth froze after that and I knew I was done for. The nose of his car dove down as he tried to brake hard. I took my eyes off the mirror and just looked forward to try and avoid hitting the person in front of me (although a new euro bumper would have been nice). BAM! That's all she wrote. Damage doesn't look pretty, but I'm hoping it's just the rear bumper and maybe the exhaust. The trunk on the right hand side looks slightly off, but not too much. Upon inspection it looks like it's possible the exhaust took some of the impact. I'm not sure if you can see the rub marks in these pics. Soooo ... now what? I haven't been in an accident for 13 years. She has just under 4k miles, the car says my rear brake light is out but it's not and now my oil indicator just suddenly dipped lower than the top arrow for the first time in 4k miles. I was pretty pissed that it happened and my neck is a tad sore (might be worse tomorrow). The guy that hit me was in a Chevy Malibu rental and the dude is from Korea ... great. I guess my day isn't nearly as bad as his. The car seems to drive ok, but I dunno ... I just want to park it in my garage and not look at it. Do I take this shit to the most reputable/expensive shop I can find? Eisenmann? How can I tell if there's any damage to the engine from hitting the exhaust? Can anyone recommend a top notch body shop in the Bay Area? Any advice would be appreciated. Warning: not for the faint of heart ...

The fact is that most people just are not all that concerned about "their cars" and thus their sloppy driving habits. Last week someone in an SUV decided to change lanes while stopped and proceded to back up and without a quick and loud horn from me would have backed right into me. I just try to leave a lot of room between me and the car in front on the freeway so that if I have to brake hard I can monitor that idiot behind me and adjust as needed.

The key is do drive defensively AND aggressively at the same time. It may sound counter-intuitive, but it's not. Hard to explain I suppose. Also realize that our cars can outbrake just about most cars out there...

Two things:
1. Get an Eisenmann. 2. Have the Korean deported back to the motherland. |

Man! Sorry to hear/see that! That really sucks.
The best place I know of in NorCal is B-Line body shop in San Jose. Some f*&^ in a Jeep backed into our Mercedes station wagon trying to park their jacked up Jeep. B-Line did an awesome job. I also another M3 fixed by B-Line that had significant front damage and it looked like new. B-Line is slow but they are meticulous. Here is some information on the shop. http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid...0150555492561# Good luck! |

Keep in mind that BMW body shops aren't always the best.
Glad that you are okay. At least there seems to be no frame damage, just painting and replacing some parts.

Good to hear you and your friend are OK. Same thing happened to me on the 405 a few years ago when I was in a beater. I had the same exact reaction as you... tried warning my friend in the passenger seat to brace for impact but only half the words came out.
The optimistic view is that the damage could have been worse. Out of all the possible places to get hit, I'd prefer the rear end more than others. Hope you find a good body shop and she's back up and running in no time. Good luck!

keep up being in good spirits despite the heart wrenching unfortunate instance harsh but shit happens although it suck balls ay. I know how you feel as i was once T-boned in the Mini back home in Aus with only 300km mileage but, i was soo lucky damage was very minor. Well this could be a blessing in disguise to source for a new set of race pipes and maybe new bumper wit CF diffuser. Glad all are ok... Merry Xmas and Happy New Year 2009
