Check any of these out? http://www.eastwood.com/satin-black-...p-coating.html

I've seen a lot of comments about this one also: http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/

Most of these require some curing on the car to set properly and I'm not sure if the rear section gets hot enough to do the job. Anyway, I have another project getting welded this week and will look at doing the same. Post up what you find.

I found a top notch shop in the DFW area of Texas who has worked on my cars before and can do the mod. If anyone is interested please PM me and maybe I can get us a group rate. I would like to get this done within the next two weeks. Thanks

I'm concerned about It holding up long term. The cured ones may be more durable. I contacted a local coater and he'll high temp powder coat the entire unit for $250. It gets a bit pricey but it should look nice. $175 unit (brand new off ebay) + $200 mod + $250 coat = $625 total...still in my budget so i'm going to have it coated.

Can you tell us the brand? Much appreciated. How long have you had it on. Any specific tips for applying it?

Just got mine done

Brand new OEM exhaust $120 bucks from ebay shipped. $200 to the shop to weld and install. I had both large perforated pipes cut out and replaced. He overlayed a small piece of steel piping on the small perforated pipes. I opted to keep the fiberglass material in, it was in a plastic bag probably because I had a new muffler and the plastic had not melted yet.

I drove an M3 equipped with the performance exhuast at VIR for two days and I loved the sound and now I have it for a fraction of the price.

No drone and the revs sound terrific. For under $400 you can't go wrong.

Great sound, at high rpm it sounds nearly stock from inside the cabin (which is what I wanted).

The car should have come like this.

It requires some heavy duty cutting and welding. Cutting the bottom perforated piping is a major pain if you choose to cut from the top of the exhaust.

With regard to welding the muffler back together, you can't weld it together in a single weld, it will burn through the exhaust--not to mention you need to fill in the area after it has been cut. So you have to be careful and take you time. We used a plasma cutter.

Since the shell of the exhaust has two layers do you completely weld each layer back on individually or what?

Yes....F ME Previous attempt here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=517882

I found a local forum member, cghempel, that wanted one and I thought I had a deal done on a new performance exhaust that went south. Sold the modified one too early, had to drive it stock, that sucked, saw this new unit on Ebay and thought what the heck...the old lady is never gonna let me spend the $3500 anyway.

I'm going to have the pipes fully replaced on this one. The last had patches welded over the larger perfs only. I hope to get a bit tighter sound if that makes sense. Anyway the unit is spotless and tips perfect, so I figure it is worth a few bucks to get it powder coated and be done with it.

I still would like to see a video comparison of a modified OEM versus the performance one. That could put it to rest for me.

The paint I used is branded by ACE hardware, but I was told it's made by Rustoleum. Be sure to use the barbecue black, good for 1000 degrees. My welder tig welded the cans shut, they are single layer. If your welder leaves any slag get it off with a wire brush. Mask off the tips with celophane and tape, and clean the muffler with acetone or brake cleaner. One nice, even coat should do.

Anybody local who wants my stock exhaust for $150 PM me.

Do you guys think if an inch or so of perforated pipe is left (and the rest sealed) the exhaust note would be a little more subdued? I want to do this but only want it to be a "tad" bit louder and I'm thinking leaving some of the holes in place will do the trick.

This is exactly what I did, and to me the sound is perfect.

The welder said mine should be done today. I used the clamps. Should be interesting to compare the sound to some of the other methods as I think I am the first to do the clamps.
Mine definitely left a few holes open. I would estimate approximatley 10% of the holes on the large perforated pipes were left open on mine.
