OIL......
so did anyone switch over to other oils and ran on the track ever since that whole oil notice? or should i just be sticking to 10w60.....i know some ppl have switched over to lighter oils but i never got a definitive answer on if ppl have changed to other weights AND have tracked excessively. anyone have any luck with other oils, with regular track days, and an analysis to back up the switch?
i'm due for an oil change this week before heading on to the track on the 12th. |

Malek has been using 0-40 and his motor still blew. I believe he will be tearing the motor down soon to see what caused it. A lot of shops i visited and mechanic friends still recommend 10-60.

I've seen too many S54s run on Castrol 10W-60 at the track and never have an issue to believe that TWS does not meet the requirements for that motor. I would suspect it to be similar for the S65.

10W60 Castrol here about every 5500-6000 miles and sample to Blackstone. GT3 lists Mobil1 0W-40, and I swap that every 4500 miles and will drop that to 3000 miles as it is pretty much track only. Samples from it to
Blackstone as well. I am not a fan of deviating from the oil the engineers picked on motors like these.

I think Blackstone says the average of all the samples they get is about 5700 miles for the S65B40. I noticed the idrive computer info cut my change back to 11000 versus 15000 after the last dealer change.

That whole thread went informative to nasty, caused a few reputable people to quit posting (didn't worth their time). Unless you are out of warranty and willing to experiment and take a chance, I'd stick with 10-60w and call it a day. Bearing upgrade if you are out of warranty would a good move.

An interesting gadget...type in the viscosity of the oil you are thinking of using at 40C and 100C and it will calculate the graph of viscosity against temp. This is one I did for 10W60 against 0W40 using the viscosity @ 100C taken from the average from a load of UOAs for Castrol 10W60 and Mobil 1. The thing to note here is how the viscosity of the 0W40 falls as you push past 210F...by 240F its already down to a high 20W. If you are seeing high temps on the track then you should bear this in mind when deciding whether to go lighter or not.. |

I heard so many conflicting "facts" about this stuff. I about to try M1 0w-40 in my E46M3. We'll see what happens...
