The CAE shifter looks beautiful but I believe our car already comes with an amazing shift and with right amount of skill, can be shifted just as fast. This is a video of a GT4 with similar shifter to ours with exception of 4.1 final

It reinforces the whole driver mod theory. The oem shifter is still more than good enough for most of us.

I've used a friend's track E36 M with the CAE shifter
It feels wonderful. Besides subjective points, I think its main advantage is it sits right by the steering wheel as it's much taller than stock, so you barely take your hands off it. If the future F80 is manual I'll get a CAE shifter as that will be the track car! |

Do they make a polyu transmission bushing for the E9x? For past cars, I found that much better at increasing shift accuracy and feel than an aftermarket shifter.

The stock shifter is a POS after driving with the CAE. In fact, whenever I get into any manual car, my first thought is "wow this shifter is mushy and vague" (including the infamous S2000 gearbox).
You aren't really switching to the CAE for faster shifts per say. You switch for a more responsive and better feeling shifter that's also much closer to your hands on the wheel. It's a fantastic mod and I love mine. And I've never had any issues with the stock shifter on and off the track. It's one of those mods that doesn't lead to faster lap times, but makes the driving experience better overall. I'd compare it to driving with a good pair of racing gloves. You don't need them and they don't affect lap times, but once you use them you don't want to drive without them.

Yes and I have that as well. But the CAE shifter isn't your average aftermarket shifter. If you've never used one, you have no idea.

Yea that's another bonus for the CAE. It's spring loaded between gates (left/right movement) so you always know what gear you are going into.

Ive never used a CAE but, in my last car that I tracked (3rd gen RX7), it wouldnt have made that much sense as the knob was almost a perfect distance from the wheel as is. I had first started out with an aftermarket shifter that had more of a 'gated' feel to it for more precise shifts but was amazed how much better it felt with the poly mount, especially during hard accel/decel.

Haven't tracked with it yet with this shifter but have tracked it a number of times with a BMW SSK. The feel of the CAE is worlds apart ime.
The spring loading is much stronger than stock so the lever moves very quickly if you let go of it briefly to get referenced again to the 3-4 column, blink of an eye really. Shifting takes effort but can be quick with practice if it's properly adjusted. There's no guessing if it's in gear with this thing, shifts are seriously solid with a heavily gated feel. I'm running urethane engine and trans mounts so I'm sure that makes a big difference but I'd buy it again without hesitation. FWIW
