DYI headlight modifications - Q&A

Hi everyone,

I'm being brave and doing something I'm usually very afraid to do. I'm modifying my E93 headlights myself.
I have tried to learn from the various posts from all the great members who have shared they projects here in the forum.

However, I fell like as much as all the posts are great, they always seem to leave certain details out.

My goals is to have all of us share our how to in one place, where everyone can come to, access the information, ask questions, troubleshoot and share ideas.

Lets do this.

Here is my objective:

I have purchase, bulbs, projectors, ballasts, evil eyes and angel eyes. i have taken the headlights apart.

I'm having difficulty with modifying the high beam reflector to a projector. Does anyone have a tutorial or how to steps to accomplish that?

Thank you for all your help and I look forward to all of us benefiting from this.

Cheers.

Let's get started: Here is where I am, I'm having a problem with modifying the reflector headlight into a projector headlight.

The reflector has 3 pieces, the big enclosure the inside enclosure where the halogen bulbs sits has a medium housing enclosure and a back piece where a small light bulb (similar to a map lamp bulb sits.).
Any ideas on how I ca get rid of the medium and small enclosure and attach a projector to the large outside reflector enclosure?

I hear you,
I was stalling for the longest time. Sangria did a great job and when I had some issues with fogging and I after a engine wash one of my headlights started malfunctioning. I decide it was time to try it.
I was able to source set of high quality headlights as a backup plan in case i destroy my OEM set.
I'll be discussing all my questions and sharing the progress. Hopefully it comes out decent.
Keep watching.

Headlights update

So after many days and some progress. i decided that i should have listen to my smarter half of my brain and just find a professional to do the job right.

I managed to take the headlights apart and disassemble them. I was excited with the prograss. I had all the parts, projectors, evil eyes, angel eyes and all.
But, I ran into a problem with modifying the reflector adaptive lights into projectors.

I decided to call a few place in the LA area and ended up having them sent to EVIL HEADLIGHTS.

Francis is the man and does an outstanding job.

I'll have pictures of the headlights before installing them and after installing them.

It's not cheap, but I believe it will be worth the time and money.

The headlights do take quite some time to make. I dropped them off on the week of December 20th. They are pretty much done. I just have to install them. Looking good, I think!

A bit late to this,

But there is a few ways you can do it. The best/easiest would be to use some sort of housing that will have arms that extend and clip to the reflector bowls of the high beams. Similar to how the low bi-xenon works. That is just bolted. I havent baked open a set of E9x head lights in years so I dont know what is out there but that would be my first approach. Or having someone 3D-print you a bracket.

Option two, actually retrofit in a set of projectors and you can also make them functional, youd need to cut out the housing of those highbeams and use a morimoto H1/2 stype screw on projector. Have done many like this in the past.

Last resort would be to use epoxy to cleanly mount the laser edged clear (ZKW?) lenses on the front of the high beams housing. You simply remove the old plastic lense and swap them out for a new glass lens.

I am thinkin of re-doing a set of my headlights and this gives me some ideas.

Sorry, sometimes we are too stubborn to realize that we cannot do something until it's too late.
I did not want to make that mistake. I realized right away after a few attempts that i did not have the skills or the patience to complete this job on my own.

I took my losses and handed my headlights to Evil Headlights, so Francis could finish them.

Even he had a hell of a job fitting everything in the headlight enclosure. He mentioned how tight the E9X enclosure is, we were barely able to close the lights properly.
In the end he did an amazing job and I'm very happy with it.
