There was an issue with older software in the car that was related to the oil level reading - mine was reading overfilled when I knew it wasn't. my '12 E93 M3 had its original software.. Updated via ISTA/P to the very latest in mid/late 2018 and the oil level now reads properly.

The car has to up to full operating temp before it will show which is a huge PITA and not really safe in case you make a mistake when filling and do not know unless you drive it for a prolonged distance. My commute is short so I can only get an oil check about once a month since all my drives are short distances. I wish it had a normal dipstick like my R8.
