How important are exhaust heatshields near the diff?

The stock muffler has them, while most aftermarket ones, including mine don't. Is it important to protect the differential or something? I am thinking about wrapping the pipes around the diff.

It is good practice. Also shields the CV boots of the rear axles.

The exhaust is less hot the further back you go. I have not worried — my Megan has been on for about 3 years.

I wonder if they always had the shield. The OEM box I bought (-09 I think) to mod didn't, while my original (-11) have them.

This is about $40 worth of material. It's not a big deal, but it helps.

only thing about that is if it does indeed get super hot, the heat is trapped and you're just disintegrating your piping. no?

its exhaust piping, thats what its for. i'd rather have hot pipes than melted cv's.
i have wrap like this on the end of my mid pipe, and on my exhaust near the diff/cv's. i specifically wanted to keep heat away from the bonding agents in the carbon driveshaft.

i posted the pic to show an example of a simple solution someone could do themself for a reasonable amount of money. plus, its kinda fun to do it.

They designed the car with great consideration of every single part, if your aftermarket exhaust doesn't have it I would do what roastbeef did and exhaust wrap the areas which had the heat shield on the original exhaust system.\
The shields are probably there to prevent the other components underneath the car from getting too hot, such as the axle and rear suspension.

I guess I'll just order some wrap and get it done

Sure, but still even the tips are actually pretty hot. My guess is that BMW made it for a reason, it is

I've seen too many cars without it to really be worried about it.
