I thought Montana would be number 1.
Texas is heavily patrolled in many suburban areas, though we do have high speed limits in many areas. I also thought Georgia would be ranked higher in strictness. The highway from Atlanta to Savannah is usually swarming with state troopers. |

Seems weird. I drive through NM frequently and they have a policy that anything under 15 over isn't reported to insurance. So on the interstates, the speed limit is 75, and I set cruise at 88 and have never been pulled over.
Of course I got a ticket last week in the most lenient state, TX. So I'm clearly a f' up. |

Been pulled over a dozen times in CA, maybe about 8 times for speeding.
California CHP always show up to court and pull you over for anything if your car is modified. Got pulled over for just having window tint (35% all around). Showed up to 3 speeding trials against CHP and they showed. Rancho Cucamonga Sheriffs have always let me off with a warning. Rancho Cucamonga Motorcycle cops never show up in court and the case is always dismissed. (4 times where I've won a case) |

With that article, I guess you have to key in to the criteria for the rankings being around reckless speeding instead of just simple speeding. With that in mind, I'm surprised and not so surprised about Delaware being so high on the list. Surprised because, I have blown through speed traps there being run by state troopers at 10 over and didn't get pulled. But in Delaware, there are tons of areas where the speed limits seem very artificially low where major highways such as RT 404 are set at 50 MPH. As such I can easily see someone from out of state blowing through a speed trap on a road like this doing 65, 70, and above winning the reckless driving lottery.

Weird. I think NC is more forgiving than VA. And DC has speed cameras where the speed instantly drops. People complain but they won’t do anything about it. They need the cash for their mismanaged city.

I think this list has a lot to do with states need for money. Since Prop 13 shut down a lot of property tax revenue in the late 1970s, CA has increased the fees and fines on everything, to stratospheric levels. The cost of the fine itself isn't so bad, but there are typically many additional fees tacked onto a ticket, that it can easily increase the cost 4-7x
Doing 1-15 over is $35. Then the state mandates a 20% surcharge on all traffic citations. Then on top of that: - court operations assessment - $40 - conviction assessment - $35 - state penalty assessment - 100% of fine - county assessment - 70% of fine - dna identification fund assessment - 40% of fine - state court construction assessment - 50% of fine - EMS assessment - 20% of fine And then any local assessments.... Try to get a building or renovation permit for real estate...

They're good. They out up speed limits outside cities too, but the closeness of nature makes us unable to comprehend numbers. Our "assistant" polices are efficient enough in keeping the speeds down in demanding bits.
