Do you mean 245/40? If so, that is what I run all around on my OEM 18s. Pretty stretched in the back but I like the square setup for being able o rotate for wear. The other option would be to get another set of OEM 18 fronts and mount those on the rear with spacers.

Hey, sorry, my mistake..245/40 yes....ok that is good. I am not willing to spend more money on a winter set up than what I have to....so thanks for that info, I will go ahead and get the tires......appreciate your help...

This is a unique set up, but for my winter set-up I want to do the following:

Wheels: VMR V710 18x9.5 square set up.

Tires: 255/40/18 Blizzard LM-25

No spacers (don't want to do spacers). I am doing a non-staggered set up cause I heard the V710 18x8.5 do go in a bit on the M3 up front, so I would either have to do spacers in front or go up to 18x9.5.

Thoughts on this setup? Will it work?

255/40R18 is fine all around. A little wide in front for deep snow, but definitely workable. The 9.5 will be a tight fit up front, but if you can get it to fit that should be a workable setup.

What rim width is ideal for a 245/40-18 tire? My plan is a square setup with repo M6 wheels and these PA3 tire sizes. I'm not sure which rim to choose.

BMW recommends 235/40/18 all around (square setup) for 2010 (as they apparently did in 2009).

Everybody else, including Tire Rack, seems to recommend avoiding this (255/40/18 in the back).

What gives?

Does Tire Rack also provide the square setup that BMW recommends (even though I can't find it on the website.)?

What to do?

Ben,

I bought a M3 this summer with the 18"OEM wheels. I had a 535i with the sports package before and was using the Dunlop sport 3D 245/40/R18 XL on4 wheels that I can no longer use, however the tires are in great shape.

So my options are:

Buy 4 A7 wheels with the TPS...but I don't like the fit in the back

Buy 2 rear tires 255/40/R18 Dunlop 3D Winter sport and fit them on the 18"OEM wheels.

Just keep the 4 winter tires that I have and put them on the OEM wheels, I think that they would fit on the 9.5" rear wheels, however it's pretty stretched...

Or just try to sell the 4 tires...won't get much fot it and buy the 4 pirelli's...

To answer the questions above:

Yes, the square setup is fine. I often recommend it for those who need the best snow/ice traction. 235/40R18 or 245/40R18 are best for maximum winter traction. 255/40R18 can work all around too. To buy a square setup, just buy four of the "front" size and none of the rear. You sacrifice aggressive looks and the ability to put the power down more aggressively on dry pavement for better snow traction and more simplicity (no need to limit to matching front/rear pairs).

245/40R18 fits a 9.5" wheel. That is the widest it is recommended for, so it will look a bit stretched, but not horribly so. The recommended range is 8"-9.5". So "ideal" would be 8.5", with 9" a close second. (8.5" is the width they put it on to measure all the specs like width and total diameter etc).

235/40's actually have the same width range, so the above applies to it as well, although I would not want to put 235/40 on 9.5" width if I could help it.

What would you say to 245/45/18 fronts and 255/45/18 rears on OEM e92 18" wheels? Will the 45 vs 40 height make it a no-go?

I have a couple of questions. The first is a really basic question, but would there be any significant change in the rolling radius in going from the OEM 19 to the recommended 18" winter tire/wheel combo? 2nd, I have the 19" wheels which I need to get winter tires. There is mostly rain in the Pacific NW but the occasional snow where it is hilly. Are the Michelins that much better than the Blizzaks or Dunlops? Thanks.

OEM 19" and OEM 18" are the same diameter, so this will apply equal to either.

OEM Front Diameter 25.7"

OEM Rear Diameter 26.3"

BMW Alternate winter size 235/40R18 diameter 25.4"

Just for good measure, going up one width front and rear, 255 front and 275 rear with the OE aspect ratio (40 for the 18" and 35 for the 19") makes very slightly taller diameter:

255/40R18 and 255/35R19 are 26" diameter
275/40R18 and 275/35R19 are 26.5" diameter

Keep in mind that like shoes or pants, tires can run a little big or small by a tenth of an inch or two, so these numbers are approximate.

I would not go up to the 45 aspect ratio. Rolling diameter will be tall by about an inch, rather than just small fractions of an inch with some of the other alternate sizes.

Any comments on a 255/40 rear 225/45 front set up for snow on original 18 inch rims for a 2009 M3?

Good point, I wasn't thinking about how the aspect ratio is being applied to a wider tire.

That said, would an extra inch of diameter be that bad for the winter? Would the extra 1/2" on each edge cause any clipping? The clearance and extra cushion might be nice for the Boston winter.

Thanks!

Hey Ben,

I just picked up some 18x8.5f/18x9r on Hankooks W300 ...running 235/40/18 front and 245/40/18 rear...any issues with this set up? only worry is that they are going to effectively change my rolling diameter...but from what I read here, i'm thinkign it's fine..just wanted some confirmation.

Thanks!

Should be fine. It falls between a square setup with all the same, and a normal stagger setup with 2 widths wider in the back, so it is within the range of normal setups.

The way the wheel well is set up, height does tend to be more of an issue than width for rubbing. It is tighter than I would want to go for a winter setup. Even if it doesn't rub, it would make you more prone to getting ice/snow chunks wedged up in between the tire and fender and getting rubbing on the snowpack.

Rear is very common to use 255/40R18 on OE 18's. The 225/45R18 recommended to fit a maximum of 8.5 wide wheel. So they'll look a little bit stretched up front, though nothing unsafe. You will have = height front and rear with that setup.

I understand going with 18/8.0 all around will not look as good as the staggered setup but will it be much better in the snow/ice? In other words, is it worth it to sacrifice looks for snow/ice performance? I was going to place my order for the recommended staggered setup through tirerack although now i am considering going with a square setup for more traction.

UPDATE::: I've had this winter package on my M3 going on two years. Absolutely NO problems in the snow. And I work in Germany and often in the early mornings I have to travel roads that have not been plowed. Mr M3 and the Dunlops handle the snow with no problems. I preferr Dunlops over the Brigstone Blizzaks. The Dunlops seem to be better in rain as well as dry roads. I believe the Blizzaks may have a slight advantage in snow, but not enough to really make a big difference.
