We tune the SMG for some great results so either car you get back into, you will have some options.

two totally different trans. One is a single clutch and the other a dual. You have to drive an smg to see the diff. Keep in mind the SMG will learn your driving and will get smoother over time so don't let initial road test steer you away at first.

I love the E60 M5, however, I wouldn't want to own a SMG version. I recommend you opt for the 6MT. How important is no 6 speed transmission to you?
personally had a low mileage 6MT E60 M5 been available when I bought my 6MT M3, i would have opted for the M5 at that time. |

it's been debated that the v10 is much better suited to the SMG as it was originally only intended for. The 6 speed was only made to appease the US market. The SMG shines in that it is a 7 speed versus the e46 m3 6 speed SMG and on a motor that likes to rev and go fast the extra gear (and thus shorter gears) is nice. |

I'll gladly take the V10 with the 6MT.

The 3-series M3 will/should always get a traditional 6 speed. this was spoken directly from the M division. Look it up, it's been discussed Ad nauseum on BMW forums. the m5 was designed and sold only with an SMG until the demands for a 6 speed were heard. the m3 is a litle bit diff of a market segment to still demand the 6 speed and truth be told, having driven both, yes the DCT trans is a great unit due to having 7 shorter gears than the 6 speed for acceleration and for providing a sense of a "fast car" but alas I like driving stick. Over my short time driving, I have had over 25-30 cars; all stick. one auto that was gone pretty quick lol |

Personally I wouldn't take a 6mt or SMG. The car is to fragile and expensive to work on. Other than the sound of the V10 I've heard its a nightmare. I'd Rather have an E39 M5 with a blower.

The only thing the m5 has on the m3 is power and size. Otherwise get another m3. Granted, driving an m3 after driving an m5/6 feels like you forgot to push the power button on the m5.

I'd chance the E60 more IMO, I think the engine is more robust. I guess I'm favoring a blown tranny over a blown engine...

If the e39 is a money pit the E60 would be a black hole lol. Guy down the road said he pays the bills for the month when an E60 comes in the shop if that says anything

Good thing about the car being older now is a large availability of good used parts. You don't have to get brand new OEM parts all the time. Just look at the classified section for the E9X parts.... and it just now is going out of production. E39 or E60, with the less complex and more robust 6spd, would be great to own just understand that they are not new and things will go wrong and need to be replaced. With $12k engine rebuilds for the S14 these days those M5s are still on the cheaper side of things.

Why not just go for the new M5?

It is not even about the shorter gearing although that really helps (actually is a huge part of it) but it is the speed at which you can shift with SMG because to keep the powerband in play on both the m3 and m5, you need to be in the lowest gear constantly. I do a ton of shifting with the paddles to keep it in 2nd, or 3rd anytime I want to accelerate which means lots of downshifting and than upshifting again to cruise etc. It would get so tiresome with a manual on the streets that I would see many just not bothering to shit gears often enough and just settle on a higher gear with much less power in gear. Plus the ratios, from 2nd and beyond is much shorter and more aggressive which also helps keep the car in the powerband. Frankly the m3 should have been a dct only car
