SES Code P0128 and Increased Emissions Error

I was driving the M3 home the other day and got a "Increased Emissions" error. I stopped by the local AutoZone and had the code read. It showed a "P0128" code meaning it is something wrong with the thermostat. I read that this could be an issue with one of the O2 sensors. I have been thinking about replacing the thermostat and water pump. Has anyone had this issue? How was it fixed?

Thermostat and o2 sensors are two different things. A thermostat error could potentially cause an o2 errors, but not likely the other way around.

Best bet is to scan the faults with a BMW specific scanner and get the four digit hex code. You could also clear and see if it returns.

I'd replace the coolant temp sensor first, then thermostat.

Thanks for the replies. Im with xfirer1guy, what is the best BMW scanner a Do-it-yourself guy can buy?

BTW, I just dropped the car off at the "stealers" to have the diagnostics ran on it. They'll let me know by noon today. Ill keep you posted on what they had to say about it.

Ok I just got the car back. The verdict was that the thermostat went out. I received the "Increased Emissions" warning because of the cars possibility of overheating which would also effect the emissions. This was told to me by the Service Advisor and a tech. I went ahead and bought a thermostat and ordered the 4 aluminum bolts that need to be replaced on the water pump. Im going to try to get around to that this weekend. Ill post pictures of the process.

Are you serious? How can you make this accusation when in your OP you [erroneously] drew a connection between a failed/failing thermostat to O2 sensors. The diagnosis posted are there to help not only you but other members how to proceed after receiving a similar code,...

It wasn't my own opinion. I was told it was a failing thermostat by the Master Tech at my local BMW dealership.

Most people use the Bavarian Technic tool ("BT Tool").

Auto zone can't read bmw codes go to a dealer I had the same problem because I let my car sit for a period of time .

Anyone is having the same code "Increased Emission" under extreme cold weather?

I had that two times already and both time were when the weather gets really cold.

Thanks. I discovered two Andriod applications that work with a BT OBD2 connector too.
