Question So I got a Speeding Ticket on 270 93 in a 55

So I got a Speeding Ticket on 270.. 93 in a 55. Pulled over by MD State Police.
I live in VA and I have a clean record.
The officer advised me to not pay the ticket and request a waiver hearing
must be the new thing in MD. A waiver hearing is you admit to the violation and you meet with the judge to determine your fate.

Should I :

1. Pay the fine $290 and hope the points don't come back to my VA license

2. Request Trial

3. Request waiver hearing

Man, you were lucky, as you know, that you didn't get a reckless in VA. I've had a couple of those and there is no fine. Have to get a lawyer and go to court. Not many choices there. At least you have the option to pay the fine in MD. Depends on if you have the time to drive back up to MD and go to court. You might be able to get it lowered. How clean is your license now?

I work in MD so going to court is no problem. I just don't want the points. I have no tickets for the past 20 years.

Ask the court magistrate if you are allowed to make a deal with the prosecutor before the hearing.
Some courts will allow this kind of discourse between the prosecutor and the defendant.
Some courts only allow hired lawyers to talk to the prosecutor.
Worth a shot.

I recently received a speeding ticket. 66 in a 45.

I had an option to pay the ticket over the phone and not go to court. But this would result in points on my record.

I instead went to traffic court. The magistrate had me pay a smaller fine plus court costs. Being that I appeared in court no points were applied to my record, and the ticket was dismissed once the fees were paid in full.

This was just my personal experience, and obviously laws vary state to state. I would say it is worth researching the channels to keep it off of your record. Call the number on the ticket and see what they have to say.

MD points do not transfer to your VA license but you should still go to court. Most of the time the judge will knock it down, especially if you have a good driving record.

Ah yes. Good old 270. That's a solid speed for that road.

Wow, 20 yrs no ticket, and then one.
Was the radar detector off?
That's how I got my one and only ticket in Maryland 15 years ago.

Agreed with the others - you should go to court. Worst case is you end up paying the fine in its entirety and you waste a few hours sitting in court.

First step is to sign up for the online driver's training course in VA, which gets you 5 positive points applied to your license. It will take you the better part of a day (its timed for each section), but well worth it. Take this before you go to court if you can

Next, as everyone said above, go to court and plead for leniency.

When I lived in MD I would go to traffic court and if the officer wasn't present then it was dismissed. If the officer was there then you get called up they ask how do you plead and I would say guilty and then ask for leniency. That's when fines get reduced no points etc and pay court fees. It sounds like they want to cash in on all of the people getting off for cop no shows and have you admit guilt and pay up off the bat.

*****UPDATE*****

Just thought i would give this tread a update in case it happens to some one else.

Left work early went to court. Paid for parking not much choice in that area.
I had to wait until almost the entire court session was done.

Bailiff calls me up. The judge immediately says you have the highest speed in my courtroom today. How do you plea?

I say not guilty with a explanation. I explained to him there were a bunch of police on the left side of the road and I was trying to get over in the lane next to me because I know the law is to move over to the right to protect police officers when they pull someone over and because a car was almost tailgating me I may have speed up on accident and it was not my intention and I have a clean driving record and I apologize to the state of Maryland

Everyone before me kinda of said the same thing and the judge reduced their speed and fines significantly.

He only reduced mine by a few miles an hour

So by the time I paid the fine and for parking I could have just paid the ticket
and not take any time off work.

And yes the points transfer to VA
and my insurance went up

I will definitely be buying a radar detector.

Damn... 93 in a m3 feels like 65 in any non-sports car. I’ve had a few cops let me go because of the car(knock on wood).

I would pay the fine. In Cali that ticket would be 500+
Valentine one with Bluetooth attachment and v1 driver app has saved me 3 times.

V1 is my go to detector. I had 3 at one point in my life as I had 3 cars and couldn't drive w/o one in Vegas.

I'm not patient enough to set up the bluetooth attachment and the app. I should try them one of these days...but my V1s are stored away since I seem to only drive in VA (or one a couple of miles into the district).

Debating on "upgrading" to V1 for a while now.

However, I've been using an Escort 9500ix out here in Vegas, after moving from Maryland. No issues so far.

The lone ticket in my life was a 72 in a 55, with my crappy Rocky Mountain Radar Detector back in 2004.

The non-speeding ticket was for having the radar detector on the dash (while off and unplugged) around the same time at Dulles Airport (RDs illegal in VA) while dropping someone off.

Wish I could use a RD in Virginia. I know some people risk it and still use it but I'm not sure how these systems work with detecting a RD and how shut off features work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
