Oh Ed, you must share the location of those Golden Eagles.

Sunol Regional Wilderness. I've never been down there, but plan to check it out soon.

Mark, thanks for the suggestion re: LAB adjustment. Here's a paltry effort.

Original posting

LAB adjusted color (slight as the scene was past peak and not that brilliant).

Right track, or not?

I would say so. I nice little bump in saturation (without overcooking it!) can make a big difference.

Yep, looking good. I would bring down the exposure just a hair to give it some umph. And like Ed said, maybe a touch more saturation. Just because the colors were a bit past peak doesn't mean your image can't be adjusted to compensate.

Here's one I shot just a bit ago. It's heavily overcast today and this was 30 minutes or so before sunset. Shooting at f8 and trying to maintain 1/1250sec and +1-2/3 EV while trying not to exceed ISO 2500. Even with the +1-2/3 EV, this took another +1.35 Exposure stops in ACR plus a shadow boost of +20. After that, some serious recovery and noise reduction work. This was with the 5D MkIII and the 400 f5.6 with the Canon 1.4x TC III mounted. It's only cropped a tiny bit to get 4:3 framing.

Thanks for the input Mark. When I'm working on the file my backgrounds are middle gray and the exposure looks to be correct, but on this site the photos are displayed with a white background and it tends to make this file look somewhat brighter. In the next few days I'll take another run at it and try some of yours and Ed's suggested tweaks. Perhaps if I open my eyes I'll have more success.

Fooling around with some vulture pics and a shot of the "castle" on campus. The figure is the Night Watchman from Rothenburg.

Two very nice pictures!
I've been to Sunol and the "little Yosemite". Didn't see any of the G.E. but just some hawks and TV's in the trees. Aftter the rains the runoff is nice. I'll see if I can find one.
That is very surreal Mark.

Just about the last shot I took with the 500. The sun was about to set, and we were headed back home when I spotted this guy standing tall on a fence post just off the road.

Thanks for the critique and direction.

By the way, I failed to mention the excellent job on the exposure of the vulture. Tough to do with such a light background.

Thanks for the critique Ed.

Another excellent raptor capture! It looks like a 500 f4 will definetly become part of your permanent arsenal. Well done.
