Our speedometers go to 200 MPH - who's been there ?

Greetings,

Ok - we all know our M3's are very capable of triple digits . Who has (on a closed course, race track) reached burying that speedo needle..all the way to the 5 o'clock position and got the V8 S65 to 200 MPH ?

(disclaimer) I only would recommend people test their cars at a closed course or dedicated race course to conduct any kind of high speed test..

Ok, that being stated - who's got pictures and proof of the illustrious 200 MPH...????

Cheers,
Merlin

I too am proud make car makes it out of the single digits. Sometimes, even up a hill she musters the power to go from 9 to 10.

So proud

No idea who this is, but with a BPM tune, this one did nearly 200mph:

Must have been fun. I don't think we have roads stellar enough to even come close to this in the US. Here, we spend a billion on a new highway with dips and bumps, slap on a 55 and call it a day.

not sure the E92 is capable of going 185+
I have a hard time hitting 200 in the R so I really doubt the 414hp V8 can...

There's several videos on YouTube of people maxing out their speedometers, but I'm not sure if that's true 200mph or not as I've read some theories on this in the past. Probably a crazy experience to go that fast!

414 bhp is not enough to get a car with the size, frontal area, and Cd of the M3 up to 200 mph. Add a supercharger and it may be a different story, however.

yea but speedo is not accurate...
indicated vs actual speed is huge

also in belgiums video, thats around 303kph which is 188mph
far from 200mph

again I think stock, the E92 is not capable of 185+ true speed

Stage 2 gives you around 430 bhp. That just isn't enough to push the M3 past 200 mph.

Physics doesn't lie, whereas people frequently do. A vehicle with the frontal area of the M3 needs a lot more than 430 bhp on tap to move air out of the way, overcome rolling resistance, and overcome other impediments to getting power to the pavement in the quest for 200 mph. The following is a quote from physicist Brian Beckman (who is also a race driver): " Race cars capable of going 200 mph usually have at least 650 hp, about 350 of which goes into overcoming air resistance. It is probably possible to go 200 mph with a car in the 450-500 hp range, but such a car would have very good aerodynamics; expensive, low-friction internal parts; and low rolling resistance tyres, which are designed to have the smallest possible contact patch like high performance bicycle tyres, and are therefore not good for handling."

Even with "bicycle tires" 430 bhp isn't getting you to 200 mph, and with a frontal area of 23.5 square feet and a Cd of 0.3, the M3 is hardly an aerodynamic groundbreaker.

Ok. Thanks for the physics lesson! I had no idea the (coded) digital speedo was off by so much! It must have been of by 30+ mph! Much wow!

wait a second. so you are saying the above speedometer showing reaching very close 200mph is not correct??

There's also other issues, such as how the tire diameter grows with speed/heat, which throws off the speedo even further. This is why any sort of instrumented speed testing relies on a VBOX or some other GPS device.

I tend to agree with others on this thread: the difference between going 180-something and 200 is not just a few HP more. Even 20-30 hp is not going to do it. The car would need to seriously decrease its frontal area, meaning taping off all of the grilles and openings, narrower tires, etc. I don't even know how stable the car would be at that speed without more downforce.

Like said, going 185+ in this car isn't possible unless supercharged or major work done. It needs high 500-600hp to do so.

Telling me I couldn't hit 200mph GPS in my 911R, which has ram air 500+hp, lighter and more aerodynamic, but E92s are hitting 200mph because its some kind of a sleeper or faster than anyone thought?

oh please *eyeroll*

Power requirements increase as the square of the increase in velocity, so a 10% increase in velocity requires twice as much power. If you need 250 bhp to reach a speed of 170 mph you would need 500 bhp to reach 187 mph.
