My second report....The first report was completed when I first purchased the car and I am not sure how many miles were on that oil. This second report is a pure report. Definitely gives me some comfort especially with the high miles.

Car is a May 2008 Build

Looks good. Nice to see that kind of reading even on a high mileage car

Looking at the viscosity I'd say its a 10W60.

Oils used are (most recent first) Redline 5w50, redline 10w60, tws

My recent analysis results. This oil had 4 hard track days (7-8 hours on track total), summer, and winter driving. In addition, a stay at the body shop in the middle of winter where they probably cold started the car multiple times to move it around. Ran m1 0w40 for winter prior to swapping to 5w50, I'm guessing this is partially the source of the increased iron as well as the viscosity drop. This report definitely shows that this motor is being tracked, but otherwise, I'm not too concerned.

The increase in copper is a bit strange - from all of the reports I've looked at, it doesn't seem to increase proportionally with lead. Being only 2 ppm higher than before, it could be from any number of sources, including contamination of the sample.

What was your reasoning for putting in RL 5w-50?
Just curious.
I happen to be a believer in RL products

Due to my climate, I wanted something that was a bit thinner at startup, yet could still handle track abuse. Redline's combination of elevated zddp, decent hths viscosity, and ester base are why I use it.

Do you use Redline 5W50 all year round? I know this sounds stupid, but any noticable difference compared to TWS or M1 or whichever other oil you've used? Just want to know more because it seems like a very good alternative oil i can use during the summer months!

I never knew there was a 5W50 available for Redline (not a redline user at all, but have never heard anything bad at all either about the brand and quality), seems like a very good choice for those who can't decide whether or not to go with TWS 10W60 or M1 0W40.

Mobil 1 also makes a very good 5w-50 packed with ZDDP; roughly 1.2k PPM. Just started running a 50/50 M1 0w40///5w50 mix for the summer. Also sent my last 0w40 fill in for a UOA so I'll post back with results from that.

I use it year round, though I really only drive it once a week in winter and rarely ever when temperatures drop below -20C. The car seems to start easier at low temperatures compared to tws, but harder than m1 0w40 (ran it once in the winter only and not at the track) At the track, I did not notice a difference between redline and tws.

Here's my 3rd report. It's my second oil change since switching to Mobil1 0W40. My lead levels are trending in the right direction. DOWN!

I decided to change the oil at 4k miles this time vs. 5k miles. I think I'm going to stick with 4k miles from now on as a precautionary measure.

Just got this M3...

I decided to have an analysis because I just bought my 2009 M3 with 54k miles.

LEAD is high, but the oil change was a little overdue (less than 1k overdue) That is all the info that I have.

What do you guys think? I heard that "if you have high lead, that it may be a bearing issue" but I wanted your opinion. I want to start tracking my car at the end of September, so I want to make sure everything is OK prior to that.

it is the tin that indicates to me that you are well into the bearings. In the instances that I've seen people pull bad bearings after having an analysis done, there is usually see a few ppm of tin in there that is otherwise absent from other reports.

OK, But does that mean I should be looking to do bearings before my first trackday?

Jack, the report says you added a quart of oil, was it 10W60? I'm glad you did an oil change seeing the oil has sheared down quite a bit.

For those using LiquiMoly.. how do you guys like it compared to the OEM oils?

With the Castrol oil, I've had to put in 2.5L of oil (0.5L OEM Castrol and 2L of OEM Shell) in a span of about 4K miles... is this normal?

I was told that the former owner topped off all the fluids and he supposedly used all the oem stuff, so "probably Castrol 10-60"

I am using Castrol 10-60 pro

I guess I should just do another oil change a few weeks before my track day and see how the results are. If it's bad, at least I will have time to do my bearings.

Any other suggestions / Comments? (I'm still kinda new to BMW stuff)

Here's my second report since I've been changing the oil myself. This is with the TWS 10W-60, but I replaced it with Mobile 1 10W-40 since I haven't been doing any track time lately so we'll see how the results compare. The TWS has been performing really impressively, I have to admit.
