Cool WTB - 2011 e90 M3 DCT (low mileage)

Hey //M'ers,

Looking for a new daily driver //M Car:

2011 e90 M3 Sedan with DCT
- <60-80k miles Please
- Preferably Stock Garage Queen
- ZCP is a Bonus
- 19" Silver Wheels
- Colors: Interlagos Blue, Lemans Blue, or Space Gray
- Interior: Black, Silvertone, Terra, or Red with Carbon Trim
- LA/Southern CA area (outside LA is cool too)

My 2009 M3 e90 Sedan DCT in Interlagos Blue with Terra interior has 175,000 miles on it and has become my Mistress ($$$$). Maintained by Southbay BMW (make your own jokes). Don't ask me how much a new DCT cost me in Dec. 2017.

Long 40+ mile daily 405 commute each way was not compatible with an //M car with major design defects (Rod Bearings, DCT, Throttle Actuators, etc.).

Not an urgent need yet, unless something else $$$$ breaks on my current high mileage M3 e90. Trying to avoid the downgrade to a CPO F30 335i M-Sport. Love my V8 S65.

Found very few //M3 Sedans in Space Gray on CarGuru in CA. Coupes are more plentiful than Sedans. Didnt even realize that e90 Sedans stopped production in 2011, while e92/93 Çoupes continued into 2013 (newer and lower miles).

BMW and //M are heading in the wrong direction. Imagine what a $$$$ 2025 M3/M4 will be like with all the compromises and defects. M3/M4s are no longer the benchmark sport sedans.

Thanks for viewing,

Cheers

Does your current one has 175K miles on original bearings?? and did BMW give you reason for DCT failure?

I am getting new BE rod bearings this week at Auto Talent in Gardena in Los Angeles, so I will know if that makes a difference in smooth engine performance and peace of mind. Along with new rod bearings, the failed motor mounts will be replaced. They have to drop the front subframe to access the oil pan, so the engine mounts are easy to replace.

BE S65 Bearings are back in stock late this month (March 2018). BE Bearings and Auto Talent are co-located in Gardena. It is only $2100 for the rod bearing service with an oil change. Replacing two failed TVAs is over $3000 at the dealership. So installing new rod bearings are a bargain if you have great Indie Shops in your area.

I had some rough idle issues with the rpm's bouncing between 500 to 750 rpm, and the car would shudder below 500 rpm. New OE motor mounts should help with the shudder and vibration. RennSport Techs indicated that it wasn't the Idle Control Valve or Fuel Tank Breather Valve. Engine software increases the rpms slightly to keep the catalytic converters hot when stopped in traffic. So the tach slightly moves from 750 to 500 rpms, while idling. I am not sold on that logic, until I get new engine mounts.

Now I am worrying about the three joints in the two piece driveshaft causing a clunk. SB indicates that the diff flange needs some lube on the back face. While doing the rod bearings, we will check for worn flex joint (guido), center support bearing, and cv joint.

The DCT was solid for 9 years and 170,000 miles until Thanksgiving Day Eve last year. DCT dropped out of gear into Neutral on the highway in stop and go traffic. Engine rpms bounced around from 1500 to 0 rpm, then I rolled into Neutral. $15k later I had a new DCT Tranny installed at Southbay BMW. There were only 2 DCTs in the entire United States, so that tells me they almost never completely fail. DCT is $12k and labor is $3k. You would think they would have heard the driveshaft clunk, and replaced the flex joint at the same time.

Phone rings and the SA says your new gold plated DCT Tranny was installed in record time. But your fuel pump failed at the same exact time. The main fuel pump is under the passenger side backseat and a transfer pump is under the drivers side back seat. The EPK module that controls both fuel pumps is behind the passenger side backseat, but that wasn't replaced.
Cost was around another $800-1000.

Three guesses what happens when your fuel pump fails? Engine rpms get erratic down to 0 rpm and the DCT drops into Neutral. I asked the SA to check with Munich and tear down the DCT to find the root cause. If it was just the fuel pump, then the mega DCT install was fraudulent. SA ignored the request. I guess I am just a paranoid aero engineer.

To be honest the DCT was bucking when shifting into some gears. So the wet clutch needed to be replaced anyway ($2500 part). The Tech, who also owns an //M3, said the DCT internal pump failed. DCT pump on ECS Tuning is only $800. If the DCT pump is offered for sail, then it is repairable. Both the wet clutch and pump could have been replaced for $6-7k. But most BMW dealerships are too scared to open up DCT Trannys, LSD Differentials, and Cylinder Heads/Blocks. A 6 spd MT is only $5-6k new.

Tech said worn TVAs was the cause of some idle issues. But I had both TVAs replaced two years earlier (40k-50k).

A month later, the oil cooler was damaged and sprung a leak caused by small/medium-sized rocks. Of course, the right/left underbelly felt protective covers were ripped off over time. So debris could damage the oil cooler and radiator from the sides or the bottom on the backside (instead of from the front through the fascia). The dealership that did the oil cooler replacement ($1800), never replaced the felt side protectors or fingered them as the cause. This was the second oil cooler replacement over the last few years.

Hope this helps...

Best bumps ever. That alone should be enough for another member to just hand you over the keys to a Cherry 2011 Interlagos Blue E90 M3 with ZCP & DCT.

I have one that I may be willing to let go if you want. It's a garage queen but I want something with less miles and maybe a different color. 2011 68000 miles Space Grey with Red interior. DCT with EDC but not a ZCP version. It has the 18" 219m wheels but I'm sure you can pick some of the 19s up easily.

Thanks for the tip. I found two Space Gray/Fox Red e90 M3s on Autotrader just today. I though it was an April Fools Day Joke.

Bump on seeking a 2011 e90 M3 in Space Gray / Interlagos Blue / Leman Blue.

Puppy got run over by an autonomous Uber Volvo XC-90, or it could have been one of those Google Maps Cars.
